Weird problems with new seagate drive

edited September 2004 in Hardware
Hi, this is my first post. I've checked all the faqs and stuff but this is one weird problem. I just installed a new 200GB seagate PATA drive, and this gave me two problems:

NOTE: The drive itself has always been recognized in bios and in the windows device manager

1. Windows won't boot unless the winxp cd boots and I don't press a key so the installation loads. You know, after the IRQ table shows. If I don't have the cd in drive it just stops after "Boot from CD" is shown. What I've tried so far:
- Changing the boot order
- Using the recovery console to start FIXBOOT (Somehow my windows disk appears as D: in the recovery console, but its always been C: in windows)
- Changing IDE slots (moving IDE cables around)

2. The seagate drive has several times disappeared or shown like it was empty in the explorer. (It was still "Working" in the device manager). Haven't had any ideas how to solve this one. It's worked great as long as its been available in the explorer..

I'd appreciate any ideas. I'll soon reinstall xp and install a new bios otherwise. I just hope I don't have to.

Thanks for your time.

    First...welcome to Short-Media.

Okay...onto your problem. Check your BIOS for LBA and enable it. This is a common mistake with older motherboards. If your motherboard is fairly new...within the recent couple of years then the BIOS should handle it and that option won't be there....but large disk access will be supported.

Part of the problem may be the 137 GB barrier. This...oh so straight forward article from Microsoft explains how to overcome the 137 GB barrier.

Thanks. I doubt that would be the problem though since I've already filled the disk with over 180GB.. The motherboard isn't older than a couple of years.. but since I've used up that much space one would think I should have it enabled =)

I think I posted a .reg file here somewhere that people could download and install to overcome that 137gig barrier

Problems were solved with a reinstallation of XP and interestingly enough a defrag (!?)
