Dell System and NEW PSU HELP!

edited October 2004 in Hardware
Hey everybody,

I am new to the forums so let me start by saying hello. Anyway, I have has a Dell Dimension 4550 for a little over a year now and I am in the process of creating a new system. I bought a new case and a psu. However, I was told that putting a standard psu with a Dell motherboard could fry it into oblivion. Does anybody know anything about the compatibility of the Dell Motherboard with a standard PSU? Thanks.

Yes. In a word, there is none.

You cannot plug a standard PSU into a dell motherboard. It will kill the motherboard.

    Sorry :(

Damn! I was looking forward to not having to deal with that problem. What kind of motherboard should I get then for a P4 2.4 GHz processor and standard psu?

    Why would that happen? :confused2

    EDIT
demonaz, many people use Asus P4C800 Deluxe or Abit IC7 Max 3 (is that right?) Very stable, perform well, and they overclock very well from what I hear but you may not be into that.

    are my reconmendations

im running a Asus P4P800 right now and it works bee-utifly, the MSI isnt as fast as the Asus but its taken a big beating and refuses to quit ( ive dropped it a few times )

    TheGr81:

Dell uses a non-standard pinout for the power connector on their motherboards. I believe it's called EATX or something like that. It physically fits well with a standard PSU but the pinout is different, and plugging a standard PSU into a Dell motherboard will actually burn out the motherboard.

yes and if you search around the net most likely you can find the pin out for that particular dell MOB and there are instructions that will show you how to change the wireing in the standard PSU to be the pin out that Dell PSUs require.

The connector is the same and the V-rails are all the same the wireing is just different.

I've looked before and never had any luck with those. Nor have I ever been able to find a convertor.

If you find a pin-out diagram for your model, it may turn out that the pinout is standard ATX.

See this thread for an in-depth analysis of the topic, applied to a Dell Dimension 4600.
