MoBo and RAM help!

edited September 2004 in Hardware
Hello (I posted this question in the wrong place before, sorry)

I have yet another question, lol. The memory that I bought is a corsair xms extreme 184 pin 1gb (512x2) DDR PC3700. Now, I have been looking everywhere and I have been only able to find one motherboard that can support PC3700. Hard to find. Is it possible that there are motherboards which can support pc3200 to support the pc3700? Also, another topic similar to this. The motherboard I found said it supports 4 x unbuffered 2.5V RAM. The corsair is 2.75v. Does this make a difference? Thank you for you answers.

    PC3200 = DDR400 = 200mhz Double Data Rate Sdram
    PC3500 = DDR433 = 217mhz Double Data Rate Sdram
    PC3700 = DDR466 = 233mhz Double Data Rate Sdram
    PC4000 = DDR500 = 250mhz Double Data Rate Sdram

    DDR400 (200mhz) is the spec memory type for Pentium 4 "C" & "E" and Opteron, Athlon 64, Sempron (& Athlon XP 3200+). As there isn't an official CPU type requiring DDR466 (PC3700) so motherboards don't officially support it.

    The only way to reach that speed is through FSB Overclocking

    Also standard DDR (266,333,400) voltage is 2.5v. However highspeed (PC3500 - PC4400 & higher) memory may require 2.6, 2.7, 2.8 or as much as 2.9v (Geil) to maintain stability at their rated speeds.

    Would you have any suggestions as to which motherboard I should use?

    What CPU are you using?

    Well I am going to get a CPU to put in the new motherboard, hopefully a Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz

    Personally, I like my Abit IC7-G mobo. I'm presently running it at 275 fsb with OCZ PC4400 EL Gold ddr at 1:1 with no board mods done. Other people will recommend the Asus boards with the i865 or i875 chipset and I've heard that the DFI boards overclock well too. For Abit boards, I recommend the IC7, IC7-G or IC7 Max3 for canterwood boards and the IS7 series for a springdale board.

    Newegg P4 prices

    Pentium 4 2.4"C" OEM $146
    Pentium 4 2.4"C" Retail $157

    Mudd mobo choices are good one for the Pentium4, However for around the same prices You can buy better performance with the AMD Athlon 64 CPUs below. Thats better performance when at stock speeds AND when overclocked.

    Newegg Athlon 64 prices

    Athlon 64 2800+ OEM $144 (1.8ghz 512K)
    Athlon 64 2800+ Retail $142
    Athlon 64 3000+ OEM $163 (2.0ghz 512K)
    Athlon 64 3000+ Retail $172

    Top Athlon 64 (Socket 754) mobos are Abit KV8 Pro (K8T800 Pro), Epox 8KDA3+ (NF3-250gb) DFI Lanparty UT (NF3-250gb), MSI K8N Neo Platinum (NF3-250gb)

    All can do in excess of FSB 260mhz

    thank you. Although I found that there are alot of motherboards that don't give the voltage support for the memory. So far I have only found an MSI mobo that says 2.5v supported and that's it. All I need now is for a mobo to support the voltage of the memory.

    Do a google search for reviews on the mobo your interested in.
