Crashing & Dropping from Games

Hey all

I posted about this problem a while back when i first got my PC, but i played around with it after formatting around 12736129321 times hehe and all seemed fine with only a few crashes here and there.

Since a couple of days ago when i bought Doom 3, i started to play Games more again.. this meant that yes here come the crashes. Some times i could go all of about 15 mins before it freezes with graphical error or just drops back to desktop, sometimes even restarting my PC.

I think i have tried everything to my knowledge and even more to get this damn thing to work, with/without my soundcard, swapped card to diffrent PCI slots.. still no change, not had chance to swap the GFX card with another one as of yet but if all else fails then i think that might have to be done.

I think the problem is my GFX card doesnt like the Chip set on my Mobo, ive got a couple of things on device manager that need attention.. (See Attached Files)

When i install new updates or a driver i think is related to the "RAID" device windows slows and does not load when i re-start my PC.

Mobo: GA-K8NNXP Gigabyte with nForce 3 Chip
GFX card: ATi RADEON 9600 256mb

When i go to windows update and install one hardware package.. (see Attached Files) this does the same thing as mentioned above, halts on the windows loading,

I really dont know what to do :banghead: and this crashing is getting very anoying now hehe if anyone can suggest anything that might be the problem or just simply throw ideas/solutions at me and i will try them out lol

Cheers for the replies

I would start with uninstalling/reinstalling the gfx card and its drivers. The fact that you have two entries for it is because it has output for two monitors, so that is normal. It shouldn't be turned off on install though, did you turn it off or is it indicating an error?

As for the raid, my first guess would be that there are no drivers installed for it or the ethernet controller.

yeh i disabled the secondary display, just to see it it changed anything, as for the "raid" part is that to do with the windows Update that comes up does anyone know?

right-click on the raid display in your device manager. Then click on properties, it should display a message indicating what may be wrong. It may say there are no drivers for it. The cd that came with the mobo should have the necessary drivers for the raid and the ethernet controller, assuming these are both onboard. (usually the case with these new mobos)

As for the gfx card, if it is crashing out during times of heavy use (ie games) it may be overheating due to insufficient or faulty cooling. Check the temps on the card if you a way to do so via a monitoring program, or physically check the card if you don't. If its very hot to the touch then it is overheating.

Don't disable the secondary display adapter, it's there for a reason.

Your instability may be caused by heat, as Jolyon33 pointed out, but to me it sounds like a possible power problem. Can you check the voltages before, during, ad after you play your games and post back? Also, what PSU are you using?

Other than that, update to latest drivers (video card and chipset), turn off fast writes all that other stuff...
