You're going to want to try our alternative removal method.

The processes you must end are:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvsvc32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\iprj.exe

Another thing, I deleted the iprj.exe file but I don't know why it is still a running process. I only deleted the exact file; there were other iprj files present when I searched my hard drive. Should I have deleted them all? When I opened IE the home page went to about.blank but it didn't load.

    Thanks
  • edited September 2004
One more thing (sorry), I assumed by "killing" the file, it meant to fix the file through HJT. I hope I did the right action!!
  • edited September 2004
Yet another thing!! (feel free to tell me off) Along with home search assistant I also have other files and folders I am unable to remove they are: search extender, shopping wizard, and pc health. I was just wondering if these programs are affiliated with home search assistant or not. If they aren't I was wondering if you have any further advice in removing them as well.

    Thank you

Okay you must have missed something cause you are reinfected again. Read the guide closely, and try again.

    These are the bad entries:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\lipqz.dll/sp.html#37049
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\lipqz.dll/sp.html#37049
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\lipqz.dll/sp.html#37049
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\lipqz.dll/sp.html#37049
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\lipqz.dll/sp.html#37049
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\lipqz.dll/sp.html#37049
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\lipqz.dll/sp.html#37049

From that, you can see that the malicious DLL is lipqz.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\iprj.exe

Is the active process that must be killed, and then that file must be deleted

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D31CBD91-5B80-AB86-0559-F9D9CBB187FD} - C:\WINDOWS\apiit.dll

is the BHO reloader. That file will reinfect you when you open internet explorer. It must be killed as well.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SystemTray] SysTray.Exe
    Get rid of that, too.

So, end the process, delete those files, pull the plug, post new log. Try it again.

Well, I can see that I'm infected once again. I know that I did everything you said. I even did it twice after finding I was infected again after the first time (following the alternative removal method). Should I be restarting in safe mode? Could you please look at my log again. Thank you so much!

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sysei32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysei32.exe

After you do all that, instead of pulling the plug, run HJT one more time, and look for entries that match the pattern of this last infection.

There's always a bunch of R1s that call up randomname.dll/sp.html, then an O2 BHO reloader that is randomly named, then an O4 HKLM\...\Run: entry that is randomly named. If you see them, Kill them all again. Do it until HJT looks clean, and THEN pull the plug.

Reboot, and post a new log :)

Here is my recent scan. The BHO reloader didn't show up which is the first time it hasn't yet, so I am making progress. I think my problem was that I was just ending the task in the task manager window instead of ending the process tree. My home page still goes to about:blank but it won't load. Thanks for being so patient with me, it is more appreciated than you know.

One more thing I am trying to find the program that removes the search assistant from my add/remove programs list because I can't do it manually. I can't seem to find it anywhere. I was also looking for cws shredder as well. Would you be so kind as to post links for these? Thank you so much again.

Not sure what program that is. I never bother with it, the add/remove programs list doesn't bother me. I'm sure a search of this site or google will help.

CWShredder was end-of-lifed at 1.59.1. You can find it here.
