Linksys WRT54G

edited September 2004 in Hardware
While I'm sure not the only router that does this, there are access restrictions based on the day of week.. time of day... etc... but no place to enter in the time - however the router has it.

Somehow, the router gets the time and date - and it's not from my pc that I admin it with because the minutes and seconds are different... I have 7 PC's all dhcp clients and was wondering if the router sets it's clock based on ip address'... mac address'...???? I want to ensure my kids are not going to access the internet late at night simply by changing the time on their pc...

Where does the time and date come from???

Thanks
James

    The router is a mini computer. It runs a small compilation of Linux on a 200MHz MIPS processor. It has its own time.

    //EDIT:

    I should've clarified. Like Prime said, it obtains it via SNTP. I'm pretty sure it can hold its own time without a connection, however.

    It gets its time from a network SNTP server. I'm not sure which one it uses (there are several "public" sntp servers such as tock.usno.navy.mil and time.windows.com). These are time servers whose sole job it is to provide accurate (atomic clock) time to the internet, for any device that requests it.

    Thanks... so if this router goes through another router with only port 80 outbound access... it will just be a free running clock... no way to set it...

    Usefull info... Linksys techs told me it was based on the PC that was connecting - but it wasn't this way after I synced all my pc's to the same time and the router was still different...
