the BIOS is pretty easy to navigate, if its a newer system probly after 2000 or so its even easier.

when ya get into the bios initially you probly see a screen that shows all the drives your computer has in it: CD ROM drives, floppy drive and Hard Drives

    this is for MOST bios's:
if you look at the top you should see different catagories of information. your looking for a "boot" "boot configuration" or somthing along those lines.

you should be able to use the arrow keys to go left and right to enter different catagories, and the down arrows to gfet to the different values under the catagories.

once you locate the boot sequence it will usually look like a list kinda like

    1st boot device: HDD1
    2nd boot device: cd-rom
    3rd boot device: floppy drive

once you locate it you need to set the cd rom to the 1st boot device, depending on the bios this is done with the plus (+) and minus (-) keys, or with the enter key

just move that to the 1st boot device and then save and exit
with the xo cd in the drive it will say "Press any key to boot from cd rom" just hit any key and it will launch the setup :)

But it booted when you just reinstalled XP right? Thats how you installed it? And its a real cd not a copy someone burned?

Unmountable boot volume usually means you just need to clean the filesystem.

Please list how many hard disks and cdroms etc.. are in the computer and make sure no floppy disk is left in the drive for us. When you found the area in the bios that listed the boot order can you please copy it down exactly and post that also?

    tex

then the only thing that i can think of is that you have more than 1 cd rom device and have the cd in the drive thats not set to the 1st boot device, or the cd drive is still not the 1st boot device

If you want to boot off the cd ever

    make it

    cdrom
harddisk. (depening on the bios you often have sperate options for differant harddisks and it needs to be the FIRST one. usually id0 )

you see, i had the same problem too. finally, i solve this problem through a friend that telling me to use the winme cd or win98se cd to run the fdisk. of course, you had to select the booting sequence like boot from the cdrom. i delete all the partition and then format it into the fat32 file system and finally, insert the xp cd and running the setup. my 8mb unmount partition had just gone from the selecting installed drive setup screen.
