Applications opening up in foreground - way to change?

One major annoyance I have with Windows XP:
I routinely have 4-5 apps open at a time. The problem is, when I launch a new app, or go to a website that needs input (like my bank website for example), whatever application "pops up" launches in the foreground, automatically switching me to that app. So, for example, say I open my bank website and launch quickbooks at the same time. I start typing my quickbooks password in, and then the bank website finishes launching and the browser windows "pops" to the front, and when I look up, I've typed half of my password into the bank password dialog. I hate this. It happens all the time and it bugs the crap out of me.
Is there any way to tell windows to launch apps in the background instead of the foreground, and wait for me to manually switch to them when I decide to?

I've always hated that ... often, when loading a slow site, I'd go to something else, and then it'd load and pop up, which pissed me off. Not anymore! Get the TweakUI powertool for XP! There's an option buried somewhere in there, and while it isn't perfect, it works 95% of the time.
(dude, I sound like a crappy door-to-door salesman )
I had the same problem and didn't like it any more than the rest of you. As pointed out, it's not perfect but it is still pretty good.
HKCU \ Control Panel \ Desktop -- change the ForegroundFlashCount DWORD value to whatever number suits you (0 for infinite flashes). Change the ForegroundLockTimeout DWORD value to whatever you like; 0 is infinite, 200000 is the default.
