Realtek 8110S Problem with Cable Modem

edited September 2004 in Science & Tech
Hi, I'm using an NTL Ambit cable modem on my GigaByte GA-7N400 Pro2 (Rev 2) M/B. The on board LAN controller is a Realtek 8110S. The problem i'm having is that i seem to lose my connection for about 30 seconds every couple of minutes or so, I've got XP Pro with SP2 installed. IE and the online games i play are exceptions in Windoews firewall, i'm not running any other firewall. I'm up to date with all my system drivers and TCP is installed. There doesn't seem to be any problems with NTL ISP, anyone got any clues why i keep losing my connection? Bug with SP2? any advice would be great! Thanks, Si.

System Specs:

AMD Athlon XP 3200
GigaByte GA-7N400 Pro2 (Rev2)
Sapphire 9800 XT
Soundblaster Augidy Player
Win Xp Pro S/P2
Drivers: Nvidia NForce 5.10
Realtek LAN Driver 6.16

Does this occur no matter what? (EG: Surfing, game play, no browser open at all?) or does this occur just during game play?

Does the icon in the taskbar pop us saying you've lost a connection or does the browser just freeze?

Open up a command prompt and type ipconfig/all

Under DHCP ENABLED it should say YES.

If it doesn't then START>CONTROL PANEL>NETWORK CONNECTIONS and right click and choose PROPERTIES on the LAN connection icon.

Highlight INTERNET PROTOCOL TCP/IP and click PROPERTIES. Ensure the radio buttons for OBTAIN AN IP ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY and OBTAIN DNS SERVER ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY are selected. Click on the ALTERNATE CONFIGURATION tab and ensure that the AUTOMATIC PRIVATE IP ADDRESS radio button is selected.

There have been some reports about the AUTOMATIC PRIVATE IP ADDRESS causing network problems in SP2 but I do not think it is specific to your situation.

My own ISP knocked off my cable modem for a few hours just recently after SP2 was introduced. It was specific to my particular brand of modem and the problem was at the ISP end and not mine.

If you've done this and all checks out then call your ISP and see what they have to say.
