Need to know startup bios settings for K8vSe Deluxe

edited September 2004 in Hardware
Hi Guys,
Here's what I've got...
K8V-SE Deluxe mobo (bios rev 4)
AMD 64 3200+
512mb PC 3200 Ram Mwave branded, vdata chips)
2 X's 160 GB Maxtor Hd's on ide (7200 rpm 8 mb cache)
I just want to run at "stock" speed. Stability is the issue because this machine runs a lot more apps (photo editing mainly) than games. That said, I'd like to turn out a decent gaming performance. Comparable 3dmarks (03) are around 7000, and I'm pulling down a stellar 2923.
I'd just like to get my bios settings right and see what happens. I'm pretty overwhelmed at this point trying to sort out all the overclocking write-ups I've read.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

what video card do you have? 3D Mark is much more biased towards your video card than overall system performance, so a low end card will pull your score down by a huge amount. Also try updating all your drivers (motherboard, video card, sound etc..) before you start playing with BIOS settings.

It's a radeon pro 9800 by ati running on the latest drivers from ati. My mobo is also running on the latest drivers.

can you run cpuid so that we can check everything is running at the correct speeds to start off with.

here's the link, just download it and run it. then post screen shots of the cpu information & memory information.

    cpuid

Hmm well all looks ok there.

I fixed the two shots that were screwed up. All five shots are in there now.
I noticed the agp aperature was 64mb. My card is 128 mb, I'm guessing I should bump that up?

I'll check the bank interleave and get back at ya. I was wondering about the ddr setting. there's an option to set it at ddr 133, 266, 333 or 400 i think. I have to enable something along the way, too. If I can find it again, I'll see what it's all about.
    I appreciate help Jim!!!

I checked the tristate and it was enabled. Bank interleave was set at auto. I also changed the memclock mode from auto to limit, then changed the memclock to cpu ratio to 2:1 DDR400. I'm guessing that's right bein as my memory is pc3200.
Anything else I can tweak? The cpu score was 890 somethin.
Here's the result set like that...

Ok well it seems you've got then about right in the bios. Now I'd check you're video card settings within windows. What version of via drivers are you using & version of vid card drivers are you using.
  • edited September 2004
The video card driver is rev. 6.14.10.6476 and via is rev 4.49.

Ok are you running 3dmark with the anti-alaising & anisotropic settings turned of in both 3d & open gl tabs. Most time they are are set to application preference by default, so if not turn them off, as this seriously cripples your scores.

4.53 are the latest via drivers so it might be an idea to up date them. I dont know whether those cat drivers are the latest but it would'nt hurt to re-install Cat 4.9 drivers as well then re run 3dmark with the settings disabled as mentioned before

I tried turning off the antialiasing and antroscopic filtering, but the control panel wouldn't let me shut them off, only lower them to a minimum of 2X. I did exactly that and benchmarked. It plummeted to around 4800. I reset defaults and scored 5997. I'll see if I can find those drivers you mentioned and check back.

Yep just ran a few tests on my rig, don't adjust the those settings it does lower the score. Sorry, it didn't used to. A score of around 6000 isn't to bad if the graphics card isn't overclocked.

    Hi Jimborae,
I'm thinkin that's a pretty fair mark, too. The top end marks on the same setup are around 7500 at 3dmark's online deal. With no overclocking on the board or on the card, I'm thinkin that's a pretty sweet score.
I was gettin around 1024 marks on my last pile of parts (a7v8x mobo, Athlon XP 2400, 512mb ram, xfx gefx 5200). This whole build was an awesome learning experience. I'm kind of sad it's coming to a close. Now all there is to do is oc this stuff. From what I've read, there's not a whole lot to do in that department with this setup.
There's a nice overclocking writeup at http://www.dugu9tweaks.net/guides/a64oc/index.html for this setup that I want to read again. It's probably the best guide I've seen, and I've done a ****load of diggin.
Your time and your help has been hugely appreciated. Thanks a million!!!

No problem, glad to be of help. :) FYI my max score in 3d 2003 was 6963

    Regards

    Hi Jim,
What'd it take to get to 6963? I was messing with atitool to see what kind of overclock the 9800 pro would take. It doesn't appear to be much. It starts breaking up very quickly with just minor increases.
One other thing I noticed in 3dmark... I'm not testing on one of the sound tests. It's 6 channel sound or 8 channel sound or something. I'm guessing if I'm missing a whole test, that'll affect my score. Is that right, or does the program adjust scores for tests your rig can't perform?
I finished puttin my machine back together last night. I got all the wires managed and all the mods put back in order. I'll drop some pics after a bit. It's a sweet lookin rig, I'm really pleased.
