w00t! Finally did it, and I've been trying off and on for a few months now.
I declared victory early this afternoon when I brought up my first Gnome session and set it to start by default when I boot. So far, sound works on my Audigy2, I can get 1600x1200 on my All in Wonder 9800 Pro but from what I can tell it isn't 3D accelerated at the moment, network works, and both my optical drives work. I'm typing this from a Mozilla window! I got Xine and XMMS to install, but haven't had a chance to really mess with them. Porthole works more or less; it crashes occasionally but I've used it to successfully install a few packages.
I still haven't figured out how to set up my VT8237 southbridge RAID, and several packages still return build errors when I try to emerge them (notably mplayer and gaim). Not sure if that's their actual packages or some of their dependencies failing.
Any suggestions on neat stuff to install?
