42 Processes Running. Too many?

Howdy, I've recently resolved an adware issue and I’ve been reading some of the documentation pertaining to the subject on this website. I learned that for a system running Windows it’s common to find between 10 and 20 processes running in task manager. I find 42 processes running on my system. I hoped you might know which if these processes are necessary, why there are so many and what steps I can take. I find it curious that there are multiple processes listed with the same name. Might this play a role? Thank you in advance for your kind help.

If I posted this thread under the wrong category please let me know. Sorry. I've included a screen shot of my Task Manager Processes screen as an attachment. Thanks again.
-Michael

I've got 43 and I'm on messenger, AIM, WinAMP, browsing, and running a few background programs (SigX, BitDefender, MBM5) so you've got nothing to worry about. As for your programs' legitimacy, I can't say, maybe a spyware pro will check it out for ya :)

28 with two browsers, AIM, ICQ, FAH Console + Firedaemon, and the two services associated with AVG.

Balls ... Thrax, you're gonna have to teach us a trick or two... I thought I already eliminated everything I could!

    Right on.

Ok, so 42 is less than 43, but any idea why I have a few separate incidences of duplicate processes running?

Well for one I think Thrax is on 2k which has less processes than XP to begin with. I also bet his is more tweaked than all yours anyway.

I have 26 on XP with EM3, 2* IE, ABC, MSN, and FAH. Nothing that is not needed is not running.

    I haven't disabled any services yet. ;)

    //EDIT:

I optomized my services, and now I'm running at 23. On a fresh boot, I use 105 MB of RAM.

Try starting at the top and google for every process name. Google is your friend.

Hehe after I am on for awhile I average over 400mb of RAM. 150mb for FAH and anywhere from like 30-150 for torrents.

Where exactly do those numbers come from?

I have 28 processes and 3 are for Intel RAID stuff, 1 for Intel NIC, and 4 for NOD32.

As you can tell I don't let anybody install their bloatware/scheduling junk

Well, I personally use Maxthon (formerly MyIE2) instead of Internet Explorer, and it has an option to show how much free ram I have right in my bar on the bottom, along with my IP and some other useful stuff. But, there's also a program called MemoryMAX that can show you how much you have, and even free up some, but that works mildly. I think EVEREST Home Edition (and possible Sandra?) can do this, too.

Nomad, how'd you get so few processes? I'm hardly doing a damn thing and I've still got 42, so there's potential to really free up some resources, I think.

Google, my favourite. I also use this page for a quick check for processes, etc.

36 processes from all users, CPU 100%, PF 215mb, 261616K total mem, 64812K available. How many accounts do you have on XP? That might be your duplication right there. One account, one set of processes. As easy as it they are to set up, eliminate one and see if it drops some processes.
