Windows Control Panel Function-Display

First, my thanks for this site. Very helpful.

My first issue is this:
My display settings are set to 600x48- pixels, I go, set under settings to 1078x726 (?), hit apply, restart as requested, nothing, still plagued by large icons, poor colour etc.

Also:
I have been affected by the malicious malaware coolsearch, about: blank, and have been running spyware removal software, spy sweeper. adaware . Can the malaware have impacted my settings?

Hoping for a straightforward answer for my non-techie mind. Any help is much appreciated.

If more info is needed. please advise.

Thanks for your response, is there a way to see if they have, how can I restore to original control panel?
