okay i just bought a vaio woot finally!!

anyways, it is designed to be light and compact so the cdrom is an external. i would like to buy an external dvdrom so i can watch movies on it; could someone point one out? it was suggested to me that i could do it if i have a pcmcia slot or possibly even a usb one; the laptop has both. suggestions? maybe something on newegg? i looked myself but im not sure which ones would work

thanks a lot!

*edit damn im sorry i dunno how i ended up posting this in the deal depot :( please move or delete

    I'm assuming you have usb 2.0 ports available right? Might I suggest buying one the thousands of external 5 1/4 usb 2.0 cases that can house a standard dvd/cd rom drive? Newegg has cool double layer dvd-r/dvd+r and dvd-ram cd burners for under 80 bucks. Look for LG as the brand I think it is. THESE ARE BURNERS! You can burn dvd's as well as watch them. Now go hit ebay and search for "usb 2.0 enclosure" You can find tons for under $40 including shipping.

    If thats to much to spend a normal dvd-rom drive is probably 20 bucks that would fit the enclosure but for 50 more you get a state of the art burner.

    its only a 750 mhz pc and i have a dvd burner on my desktop so i think ill stick with just a dvdrom

    however, what is the difference between buying a dvdrom + an enclosure versus just buying an external dvdrom ?

    thanks!

    Price will be the only major difference. You can get a 16x drive for $23, and an enclosure for less than 20, and the cheapest 16x external I found on newegg was $70. You could probably get one cheaper, but I'm too lazy to find the absolute lowest price.

    I use an external Sony 8x DVD±RW at work (Firewire and USB 2.0). Works great, and Newegg had a good price on it. Model number DRX-530UL.

    Which model is it? I have a small vaio that has an external DVD that runs on the FireWire port...

    These are the type of things I mean (nothing to do with me BTW :))

    EBAY1

    EBAY2

    EBAY3

    EBAY4 (I have this model)

    thanks whoever moved my thread for me :)

    ah okay i see, i forgot to mention that the laptop does not have an internal cd drive or floppy, because it is designed to be very lightweight and compact. it is a Sony Vaio PCG-R505TEK and it came with an external cdrom and an external floppy, because of course they are necessary at times. here are details:

    # P3 750 MHz (with Speedstep)
    # 320 MB PC133 SDRAM
    # 15 GB HD
    # 12.1" display, in great condition; I see no dead pixels.
    # Integrated Intel graphics
    # 10/100 NIC
    # 56K modem
    # 3COM 802.11b PCMCIA card
    # Li-ion battery.

    and

    Inputs/Outputs:

    * 4 pin firewire
    * 2 USB ports
    * DC power in
    * headphone jack
    * microphone jack
    * 56K modem
    * 10/100 NIC
    * VGA out
    * Sony memory stick
    * PCMCIA slot

    so what do you think would be the best solution? price isnt a big issue because i got the notebook for much less than i was expecting to pay. so, what would be the quietest option? and what would perform the best when watching dvds?

    thank you guys so much for taking the time too look into this for me; its my first laptop so im real new to this stuff
