Utilities Poll - Week 4

This week's topic: Download Managers

Your input will determine the programs chosen to bear the proud title "S-M Approved", so be sure to vote!

Have you ever had a large download choke on you right at the end? Ever wished you could download multiple files at once automatically? If so, you probably went looking for a good Download Manager to use.

Which one is your favorite?

Please add your comments and opinions in this thread! Once this project is complete there will be an article written detailing the "S-M Approved" utilities. Knowing "what" you prefer would be great. Knowing "why" you prefer it would be even better.

I will attempt to modify the poll if one of the "Other" votes gets way more votes than one I've already listed.

Note: Thanks for the great response <a target="_blank" href="http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1797"&gt;last week<a>. The voting was close - all of your comments and all software receiving votes will be mentioned when the Short-Media Approved Utilities list is published.

I'm an "other" vote for Mass Downloader but based on 30 day trialware. I'm looking for a good NON SPYING freeware DL manager.

GetRight has no spyware or ads. It can be used as freeware with a few options disabled.

I don't use one anymore, but when I did, it was of the Download Accelerator variety.

Flashget does everything I need without hassle. Works for me.

Well, when GetRight was a younger version, GetRight did have Gator as an option to install, and ads, but this was before it got to version 4

In honesty, I don't use a download manager for day-to-day downloads. FTP'ing is another story, but for just downloading files off the internet using a browser, I'll just use the integrated download manager/window.

I was going to put up a choice of "Don't Use Any", but couldn't decide which one on the list to remove (ten choice limit in the polls).

I'll put this down as "Other", with an explanation, when I write the article.

BTW - I've begun working on Part I of the "Short-Media Recommended Utilities" article. Look for more news soon!

PS: I collect old radio shows and have often downloaded a gig or more in a single shot. (My Superman radio show folder alone is about 3.35GB - 1,117 shows!) My fingers would have fallen off had it been necessary to click each file individually. :eek3::tongue:

I tried Flashget, but it's such a b**** to use! Download Acc. does everything I need, if only it weren’t for the spy bots, I'd still use it.

One thing that pisses me off is when it tries to connect multiple times to a server that doesn’t allow it (such as a FilePlanet server), it just keeps trying over, and over, and over again.

There is also the way it shows file progress. Each file is a bunch of gray dots that turn blue... why can't they just use a freaking bar moving right to left?

And Getright (which I use to use for it's resume ability back in my dialup-days) is just too cluttered for my taste. For one thing, I don’t need/want to see each file in a special "file type" folder... I know what I'm downloading...

That's one feature I have never used. Like you, I know what I'm downloading. And It's going to need to be sorted anyway.

I never use that part anyway.

I'm with SimGuy. I had some bad experiences with download managers in the past, and I now avoid them like The Prauge (not that The Prauge isn't a nice place, I just don't spend alot of time there...)

Well since I've had time to get used to it, Flashget is starting to seem better and better. A few of the things that differ from DAP bother me, but otherwise I'd say it's a fine replacement.

Files download so quickly with DSL that a download manager is not worth (to me) the added clutter and registry entries that come along with another program. I voted for "Other" meaning "none."
