Hard Drive Help!!!

edited October 2004 in Hardware
Hey all, I'm new to this site, hopefully I can help those in need just like I'm in need of help right now. My hard drive is an 80 gb hard drive. When I go to my computer, it says it is 54 gigs full and i have 37 gigs left which is correct. Yet when i go to put anything on that drive, it comes up saying there is no room left. I even opened partition magic 8.0 incase i needed to partition the drive into two parts, and still nothing. Ran a virus scan and it iddn't pick up on any masking virus's. If anyone knows what could cause this please respond asap! :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Often, after a lot of installing and uninstalling of programs, the registery will become cluttered with leftover entries that "hold onto" drive space even if there is no reason or nothing there.

Step one: Run Microsofts own disk cleanup and empty all unecessary files including temporary, temp, tmp and temporary internet files.

Step two: use a registery tool

    http://www.sofotex.com/download/PC_Utilities/Registry_Tools/

there are several shareware versions there including registry mechanic, registry cleaner, and regcleaner. Others viewing this thread may have other suggestions.

You may also want to run HIJACK THIS from our downloads section and post the log in our SVT forums to ensure that you aren't infected by spyware or trojans.

Read the guides at the top of that forum for tools and hints first. Remember...when messing around with the registery make sure you back up your system including the registery.

You may also want to check the spyware/trojan infection option first before progressing to the registery cleaners.
