HSA Problems - Paulo Simosi

Hi,

I got a problem with HSA. I've run Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy and I've tried HSRemove but it hasn't worked.
The name HSA has left my add/remove programs menu but it's still there as it won't let me go to certain websites.
Please could you have a look at this log for me, as I'm not great at this kind of thing and would hate to mess up my computer!
Please help.

Have you rebooted since you posted that log? If not, please tell me, and I will continue to help with your problem. If you have, please post a new log, as I need to give you precise instructions, and rebooting will void them.

Fix those entries then find and delete gunty.dll, then pull the plug on your computer and post a new log.
  • edited October 2004
I've done as you said but couldn't delete gunty.dll as it was nowhere to be found, even showing all hidden files and folders.
But here's the new log. Thanks in advance.

Your log looks clean now. Try a normal reboot and see if it comes back. If it does, post a new log.

I still have a problem going to certain websites, especially hotmail, as it won't let me enter my account. But my home page is different and stays that way.
Also I have to click on the link for my ISP to connect to the internet rather than it automatically coming up when you go to internet explorer.
Should I go through all the instructions of the removal guide, in safe mode etc. or will it not help???

He's the new log, thankyou for your time.

You will need to change your homepage manually:
    Start»Settings»Control Panel»Internet Options
and there should be a box there for changing your homepage.

Also, what happens when you try to access hotmail?
  • edited October 2004
My homepage is fine now, but any website I need to sign into, mainly hotmail, it goes to the sign in page but then after signing in it doesn’t go to my account, instead it goes to a blank (white) page and says done, it will never move on and open the page, like it has been blocked. If you click on refresh it says something about the page not being able to be refreshed without resending the information, but it never progresses beyond the blank page.
But my account is fine on other computers!?

My computer will never bring up a connect window to the internet anymore, even when going to Outlook express or internet explorer, but instead you always have to go to the ISP shortcut on the desktop to connect, is that because of HSA, because it only started happening when HSA appeared on my computer?

    Thank you for your help,
    Paulo Simosi

Your problem accessing certain websites may lie in the HOSTS file. Go to Start»Search»Files and Folders and make sure you have it selected to search your whole computer. Type in "hosts" (without the quotes). A file should come up either in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\ or in C:\Windows\. Open the file in Wordpad, and paste the contents of it into this post.

    Here's the file, thanks again.

    # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
    #
    # This is a sample LMHOSTS file used by the Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
    #
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to computernames
    # (NetBIOS) names. Each entry should be kept on an individual line.
    # The IP address should be placed in the first column followed by the
    # corresponding computername. The address and the computername
    # should be separated by at least one space or tab. The "#" character
    # is generally used to denote the start of a comment (see the exceptions
    # below).
    #
    # This file is compatible with Microsoft LAN Manager 2.x TCP/IP lmhosts
    # files and offers the following extensions:
    #
    # #PRE
    # #DOM:<domain>
    # #INCLUDE <filename>
    # #BEGIN_ALTERNATE
    # #END_ALTERNATE
    # \0xnn (non-printing character support)
    #
    # Following any entry in the file with the characters "#PRE" will cause
    # the entry to be preloaded into the name cache. By default, entries are
    # not preloaded, but are parsed only after dynamic name resolution fails.
    #
    # Following an entry with the "#DOM:<domain>" tag will associate the
    # entry with the domain specified by <domain>. This affects how the
    # browser and logon services behave in TCP/IP environments. To preload
    # the host name associated with #DOM entry, it is necessary to also add a
    # #PRE to the line. The <domain> is always preloaded although it will not
    # be shown when the name cache is viewed.
    #
    # Specifying "#INCLUDE <filename>" will force the RFC NetBIOS (NBT)
    # software to seek the specified <filename> and parse it as if it were
    # local. <filename> is generally a UNC-based name, allowing a
    # centralized lmhosts file to be maintained on a server.
    # It is ALWAYS necessary to provide a mapping for the IP address of the
    # server prior to the #INCLUDE. This mapping must use the #PRE directive.
    # In addtion the share "public" in the example below must be in the
    # LanManServer list of "NullSessionShares" in order for client machines to
    # be able to read the lmhosts file successfully. This key is under
    # \machine\system\currentcontrolset\services\lanmanserver\parameters\nullsessionshares
    # in the registry. Simply add "public" to the list found there.
    #
    # The #BEGIN_ and #END_ALTERNATE keywords allow multiple #INCLUDE
    # statements to be grouped together. Any single successful include
    # will cause the group to succeed.
    #
    # Finally, non-printing characters can be embedded in mappings by
    # first surrounding the NetBIOS name in quotations, then using the
    # \0xnn notation to specify a hex value for a non-printing character.
    #
    # The following example illustrates all of these extensions:
    #
    # 102.54.94.97 rhino #PRE #DOM:networking #net group's DC
    # 102.54.94.102 "appname \0x14" #special app server
    # 102.54.94.123 popular #PRE #source server
    # 102.54.94.117 localsrv #PRE #needed for the include
    #
    # #BEGIN_ALTERNATE
    # #INCLUDE \\localsrv\public\lmhosts
    # #INCLUDE \\rhino\public\lmhosts
    # #END_ALTERNATE
    #
    # In the above example, the "appname" server contains a special
    # character in its name, the "popular" and "localsrv" server names are
    # preloaded, and the "rhino" server name is specified so it can be used
    # to later #INCLUDE a centrally maintained lmhosts file if the "localsrv"
    # system is unavailable.
    #
    # Note that the whole file is parsed including comments on each lookup,
    # so keeping the number of comments to a minimum will improve performance.
    # Therefore it is not advisable to simply add lmhosts file entries onto the
    # end of this file.

Is that the whole file? It should have a line similar to "127.0.0.1 localhost" in it.
  • edited October 2004
That was the whole of that file but I found that line in another similar file.
This file was found in C:\I386 but was also called HOSTS.

Thank you again for all you are doing.

Paulo: If you try accessing hotmail with a different browser, does it work?

Try Firefox ( in my signature ) and let me know if that fixes everything...
  • edited October 2004
Yes this seems to have worked, thanks so much!!!

But why won't internet explorer go there but Firefox will???
Also does this mean that I always have to use Firefox (not that I would mind)???

Plus, my computer will still never bring up a connect window to the internet anymore, even when going to Outlook express, internet explorer, or Firefox, but instead you always have to go to the ISP shortcut on the desktop to connect, is that because of HSA, because it only started happening when HSA appeared on my computer? Although it doesn't really matter, just curious?

Thank you all so much for your help it is truely appreciated.

I think it has to do with HSA breaking certain aspects of your system. One thing you can try is to update to Windows XP SP2, that may fix all of your problems.

I'm going to consider this issue resolved. I'm glad we could help :) Be sure to read the links in my sig, especially "How did you get infected". Also, check out the folding team. It would be truly awesome if you decided to join our community :)
