What style do you like?

I am curious what style/look you guys like best in a game of the type I am working on in class at the moment.

It's a side scrolling shooter, gonna have some cool effects I am working on, but I am still in the coding part at the moment. It's another shockwave game I am doing.

The type is familiar, the screen scrolls sideways, enemies pop up, or come out from the side as the camera moves along. You shoot them, or they shoot you. I haven't got a setting or anything yet, I originally wanted to be on a boat or something, problem with that is someone referenced my idea to some sort of Gun Boat game based on Kerry's "adventures"(or lack-there-of ;D). Either way, I am contmplating having a graphics style that the majority like, plus I figured some of you might dig being part of the dicision making in my game.

So I basically have a couple ideas I am willing to do - due to time restraints. I can't make a "realistic" look which would either require me to model and render out several objects, or worse yet, using screenshots... I am an original type of guy so I want to keep away from using other peoples work, even if this is just a student project.

It could be the "old skool" 8bit graphics of the Nintendo days, with pixelated graphics. I could even use Vector art graphics, which would mean that the game is resolution independent, allowing me to have a window or fullscreen mode whichever you choose.

Send your ideas, I still have some time before I need to make the final decision. Either way, the game should be fun.

And so you know my other peices of work, my game, the world I was working on, etc... are still being worked on, but my school stuff if numero uno on my list to get done, I will not be taking this class a 4th time.

Here is part of the prepro module I have to make:
    Summary.
Marked is a shoot'em up style game. You have secret plans of the enemy, and they will do anything it takes to ensure you do not leave with those plans, you have been marked. You must fend off the enemy until rescue comes to pull you out of the hot zone. You are currently in a fortified position with an arsenal for any possible tanks or aircraft amoung the enemy soldiers. You may also call in for artillery when things get too out of hand for you to control. Nearby friendlies will help aid you in knowing when tanks and/or enemy aircraft come.

    Pseudocode.
*You will have a wide Field of View(FOV).
*The mouse will be the primary use of firing at targets and selecting any weapons.
    *Enemies will not appear randomly.
*You can select(by mouse) between the various weapons accoring to the type of enemy.
*There will be various types of enemies; Infantry, Tank, Aircraft.
*You may call in for Artillery twice.
*Artillery is timed, you will not have enough time to call in more than two as the aircraft require time to rearm.
*Friendlies will warn of any inbound tanks or aircraft.
    *Artillery Timer

    Asset List.
    *Stinger Missile Launcher
    *Stinger Sound FX Sprites
*M136 AT4 Light Anti-Tank Shoulder Mounted Launcher Sprites
    *M136 AT4 Sound FX
    *M249(SAW) Light Machine Gun Sprites
    *M249 Sound FX
    *Explosion Sound FX

Since I am coming on my last few days of this project(for school at least) and that no one has given even a responce... I have decided to go for a new kind of art; to me at least. Pixel Art, OLD SKOOL. It's my first time doing this so I don't know how it'll turn out, but I am excited :D

Do a google IMAGE search for "pixel art city" to see the style I am referring to ;)

I didn't bother reading beyond the thread title. Is 'doggie' a relevant answer?

Here's 12 hours of work, with many short breaks for food and stuff. Still need to work on details and such, plus the colors are off, shadows need to be added, and the tank needs to be reworked. But considering what people have done on deviant art claiming it took them months to complete, I'd say this is pretty good for a first timer at pixel art :D

    Pixel by Pixel Art
