question about multiple machines

edited October 2004 in Folding@Home
Hey guys I'm still new to F@H but I've been doing seti for over 3 years, so I'm somewhat familiar with distributed computing. My question as a system builder is; is there anything I should be doing differently when running F@H on multiple machines for a semi short ammount of time? Short ammount of time being ~48 hours.

I do the same as you... I run the newest version of F@H (v5) but I don't run it as a service and make sure you select "Request work units without deadlines" as YES. I then run the F@H until I need to give the system back to the user. I transfer the F@H folder to a server and wait for the next system to be brought in. I transfer it to the system and run it until it goes by-by... so on and so on....

    That’s me...

Ok so you're actually using the same folder for new machines? That sounds like a good idea, but I've got *looks at bench* 5 desktops and a dual xeon machine up right now.

So probably just requesting WU with out a deadline basicly?

You would have 5 directories... one for each PC. The "No Deadline" is so that you don't lose the work if that particular instance of F@H is not loaded onto a system for a few weeks. I've lost several hundred points after I realized that I had a WU sitting for a month...

Ok.. I see what you're saying.

See the only bitch of it is I don't consistantly have the same ammount of machines. So having 5 one day and 30 the next few days, I can't have 30 folders out with out completely messing up my work unit que.

Well I guess I could, but I would have to manualy switch the folders after each machine completes a WU, then make sure it doesn't request another. I don't even know if I could do that or not.:scratch::scratch::scratch:

Its a pain, but it all depends on how much you want to accomplish. 30 PC's a one time would be a big pain. You can also look at getting Bootable CD-ROM version of Linux with F@H on it but when the PC is turned off, you loss any unfinished work....

There are many people here that know more about that stuff than me...
