Folders not opening

I apologize if this thread is somewhere in this forum, however I couldn't find it when browsing.
A friend of mine cannot get any folders to open once he's double clicked them. They appear to pop up for an instant, and then close. The only programs he can run are those from his startup menu, however that's it. Are there any fixes for this or does he have to repair his install of windows XP (home).
