Metro Lofts - Ann Arbor

NomadNomad A Small Piece of Hell Icrontian
edited October 2004 in Internet & Media
I got a call from a guy out in Ann Arbor a few days ago asking me to work on this, it's my first non-local client. I only had three days to work on this, and this is my second exterior I've done, so I was kind of frustrated with actually doing it, but I think it came out nice.

Not as utterly realistic as your interiors, but really good. There's just some fake quality about the light that I can't put my finger on... And the cars look fake. But really good in all other respects :)

I agree Prime, the main reason is that exterior lighting is so hard to recreate, there's just something about it. I understand what you mean about not being able to quite tell what isn't right, there's some redeeming quality that I can't really communicate, but I know it's wrong in some way.

If you had three days to do this, where did you get those trees and cars? I figure the trees may be from SpeedTree and the cars from some website? I am pretty sure you could do all that in 3 days, but I figure it might be easier to use premade items.

The trees and cars are premade of my own from previous projects(Extremely low polygon) the trees I got for free off an Arch-Viz forum a few months ago, but the archive got purged since :\ I was thinking about using 3D trees at first, but it increased the render time too much (About two-three minutes) and looked worse than what I have now.

I would think the outdoor light is so hard to reproduce because usually sunlight isn't that white. That almost seems like there's a giant fluorescent light somewhere ;D

And ... about the trees in front of the building ... are those intentionally less opaque, to not hide the building?

Other than that, it looks awesome :D. Almost everything you make floors me .

Yes, the trees are opaque because of that.

    I think it looks great!

Try a lower color index with the "sunlight". The sun is more of a 5K, or ~6.7K in bright daylight. It looks like you're using 10K there.

EDIT: Also, the sky's lighting looks a bit diffrent than the light on the building. If the sky texture is from a photograph, than that may be why.

That's something I hadn't even thought of when analyzing the light. Colour warmth in kelvin. Good thinkin', Dave!
