Friend's HJT log. It's got me stumped...

edited November 2004 in Spyware & Virus Removal
Here's a HJT log of RyThom's machine. It's got soe funky HTML stuck in the bootup (which creates the active desktop you can see in the screenshot below), and clicking anywhere on the desktop takes you to a webpage which allows you to PAY to clean up their own spyware!

I've tried removing it with HJT in both safemode AND the safemode command prompt. It keeps reappearing no matter what I do.

I got rid of the javascript in your post. We don't need that!

Dude, best way to do this is take the HD out, put it into another computer, and delete files on the HD.

You're going to want to look in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 folder to see if you can find the file that's causing the javascript.

This is a totally new thing to me. I've never seen spyware that does this. I hope it's not a trend or the start of a new thing..... :(

Well, disableing Active Desktop at least made for a temp cure. The stuff's still there though, and won't go away without a fight.

I'm home right now, Brian, but I'll show your post to Rythom so he could try your idea.

Thanks a lot, both of you. Yeah, I had never seen anything like that before either - good thing you're around!

I'm going to be upgrading my computer like crazy very soon, so when I do that, i'll just format and start from scratch. I couldn't believe they actually try to sell you a program to get rid of it though!

But for a good chuckle, check out the "engrish" on the wallpaper ;-)
