Space needed for XP Home w/SP1+2?

I had auto-update on last week and windows tried stuffing all of SP2 into the space (4 gigs) alloted for C: drive. The rub is that it woundn't fit, tried to uninstall itself, and totally borked the system. At boot it will post, go to the XP load screen and back to post, over and over. So I killed it, Fdisk'd, and reinstalled XP. As soon as I got everything reloaded the auto- updater tried to D/L SP2 again and I thought "What if I run out of room again?". Does anybody know HOW MUCH room is required for a full install of XP Home w/SP1 and 2? I always heard that 4 gigs was plenty, although that was before the arrival of the two service packs I assume. I have nothing else on C: save Norton Systemworks and all music and pics have been moved to a seperate partition. As of right now there are 883 megs left on C: for SP2 and I want to keep at least 512 megs for virtual memory. Any idea how big all of  SP2 is?

Good to see you again MGK!

I've heard that once SP2 fully deploys it's got a footprint of about half a gig or so. It does some stuff to the Windows Kernel and blows that up, plus a bunch of other stuff installs.

//edit: Here's an info page I found on Microsoft's site:

Good to see you too bro!

Thanks for the link, it helps to know exactly how much room I'll have to set aside! It adds up to darn near 3 gigs w/system restore enabled. I'll have to re-partition for SP3! ;D

There is also space reserved for system restore points. You might want to adjust that.

I turn off system restore and hibernation. Hibernation is like 500mb or so I think. And make sure to manage your page file as well. That can be like 1.5GB if you have 1Gb of RAM.

Good tips guys, as usual! Turned off hibernation and system restore, adjusted virtual mem down to min to give SP2 room to expand, reduced the size alloted to recycle bin to min and dumped all temp files. I ended up with about 1.5 gigs of free space and the install went as painless as a flu shot after that. I still have almost a gig of space left (including the page file). I suppose that earlier it just needed a wee bit more room to expand for the install.

BTW, I really like the new look and the noticable speed increase, not to mention the firewall.

Thanks again for all the help. Us 'old' guys forget stuff easily!;D
