Photoshop Giving Me Crap

So I'm working on some retouching for a friend in Photoshop 7 and when I'm all done I go to adjust the levels. But when I click on levels it automatically takes me to the color dropper tool (changing my mouse icon as if i were to have clicked on the color dropper icon) and at the same time it seems to lock up photoshop. I can't save the picture, I can't click on anything else, and it won't let me shut down the program (it greys out the X and all the menus). Only way I could shut it down was through task manager. I've downloaded the update from Adobe and I've tried reinstalling the program, still no luck. None of the other tools or filters seem to be giving me this problem. Anyone know what's going on?

Photoshop actually communicates with your video driver, I've seen some really weird problems that you would never suspect as being video related being, well, video related. Can I assume that you are running the latest version of your video driver?

Also, when uninstalling, did you wipe out PS7 preferences? They are kept in common files/adobe I believe, and they don't get wiped when you uninstall. I would try uninstalling, searching for all things ADobe, and manually deleting any photoshop files.

Good thing I read the thread before posting - I thought it was one of those PS contests where I'm supposed to depict someone actually giving you crap!

Ahhh, just a little comic relief. That's all I have to offer, seeing as how I never got past Photoshop 3.

The eyedropper tool pops up because the Levels adjustment allows you to sample colours from within the image to set balck, grey and white points. So that beahviour is normal. The crashing is not....

What kind of hardware are you running it on? Processor and RAM specs? Have you given PS7 some extra memory or enabled the use of a scratch disk in the Preferences menu? What size files are we talking about here (MB, x, y and DPI?)

Does the same thing happen if you try the "curves" adjustment? It works on the same principles as levels.

Primesuspect may be on to something with the video drivers. If the "preview' check box is on for any of the effects, PS opens a channel straight to the video driver to enable real-time (or as close to as your system can get it) preview to your screen. If you are working on a huge file, and your graphics card is not up to snuff, you may not be able to use previews.
