Has no sound, I did, but not now

edited October 2004 in Science & Tech
Until early last week I had audio on my computer.
I was cleaning up spyware problems and ran Hijack this, I may have inadvertently deleted necessary sound files.

When I click control panel. multimedia options, I have no audio playback listed, and I can not click any boxes or advanced options or create new settings.

I ran a Dr Watson check, got this message, don't know if it helps:

The file mmsystem.dll is not listed in the [boot] section of system.ini. Multimedia services may be erratic.

I have the logs of hijack this before and after if that helps.

Please advise when you can. Thanks in advance for your help.

Um, you need mmsystem.dll back, 90% positive, from the install CD for your Windows. BUT, you probably can help windows decide it wants it by uninstalling and reinstalling your sound drivers completley. Well written sound driver installers will trigger Windows to ask for the Windows CD and one of things that is asked for on that CD is that .dll you are missing. NOT all will do this, some will.

Also, see if you let HJT backup things it deleted, and see if it can restore your mmsystem.dll registry entry for you. do this before uninstalling and reinstalling any drivers, PLEASE. mmsystem.dll can get messed up, but there is a chance that if this delete was not of junk posing as a real .dll then you might have your sound back after a recovery of that entry and a restart.
