ATI Radeon 9800 Pro graphics issues with Call of Duty expansion

edited October 2004 in Gaming
Hello, I'm hoping some of you experienced ATI users, or COD users, can help me. I recently upgraded my 9600 Pro to a 9800 Pro 256 after buying the Call of DUty expansion pack United Offensive. I noticed a lot of lag/decrease in performance while playing the new boards (don't see it with the old maps they run smooth). I didn't see this much of a performance decrease with my 9600 Pro which makes me wonder could my 9800 Pro card be bad? Everything else seems to work fine. I also play Microsoft Flight Simulator which has seen an overall improvement with the upgrade. I have the latest Catalyst (4.9) drivers and have decreased my res. and visual settings way down but still no improvement. I have heard that the vehicles could be causing some graphics/lag problems but no one seems to be able to narrow it down. I at one point uninstalled ATI and put in Omega drivers but didn't like them so I uninstalled them. I'm hoping that's not the issue. Any ideas?

My specs:
p4 2.26 ghz
512mb samsung pc-800 rdram
40 gig hd

Thanks

Perhaps it's a software bug that will be addressed with a patch. Have you looked for "official" support forums from whoever makes CoD to see if other users are having a similar problem?

actually just wrote Activision today about the issue. I'm guessing since i've seen the improvement with Microsoft Flight Simulator which is a super graphics hog that it must be something with the Call of Duty files/lag. I'm just not sure why my 9600 Pro would seem to work just as well. I have heard there are lag issues with the expansion pack through the grapevine and i'm hoping to hear back from the makers. A patch is definately in order.

Bud, how much RAM do you have? I have had task manager open and noticed when starting the game just about all my RAM is sucked up and it startes getting pulled from the system cache allocation. My guess is that that can't be good. Will upgrading to 1gig of RAM inprove performace drastically or just slightly do you think?

I can't speak for CoD, but for me, going from 512 to 1gb helped out a lot with other games, ttjt. Especially doom 3 and UT2K4. Load times were significantly reduced. If you are a heavy gamer, I would say 1gb should be the minimum RAM :)

Thanks prime, i'm looking to up it to 1gig here shortly (hoping to find an e-bay deal) :) I'm guessing that probably is a big part of of the problem. I guess I'll find out here in a couple weeks then.

Bud, i'll keep my eyes open for something. I heard on a couple of COD clan sites that PunkBuster is causing lag. Something to do with the vehicles maybe. I'm guessing that may be true since most problems i'm experiencing are with the expansion pack maps.

try reverting back to older cat drivers. 4.9's honestly have not performed for me as well as the 4.8's, Ive also noticed alot of minor issues with games running Q3 engine. Ive also gotten input from other people I know saying basically the same thing.

As your issue is probably not driver related, it however could not hurt to try.

I was browsing some tech sites, seems like ATI has a beta catalyst 4.10 that addresses an issue with 9800 pro 256 meg cards. Looks like 128 of the megs are being used right or something. Trying to find more info on it.

Gobbles, thanks i'll give that a try after work today. I'm hoping also the new catalyst release will be a better fix. I havn't been around 3d gaming that much but people are saying the new ati beta is boosting 3dmark05 scores a few points. If I have time i'll have to venture into this benchmarking world (if wife, kid, and work allow the time :) ) Also, and i'm sure some of you know, do universal drivers like the catalyst act differently with different card versions? (ie: with the 9800 Pro and 9600 Pro, could one card reap the benefits more than the other with a new driver?) HOpe i'm not confusing the heck out of anyone. ;D
