New modem won't work with my router

Alright, so I've been having problems with my old cable modem I had from comcast, so I got a new RCA one. I can't remember the exact model name or number but if for some odd reason it won't work with the router. I connected it to the Internet port and connected all the PC's to the different ports and I can't get to the modem. I never had problems connecting with the old modem but this one for some odd reason wont let me connect to the internet via the router. So I read the manual for the modem and it said that if you don't have a uplink port your going to need a crossover cable, well I never had to use a crossover cable on the 'internet' port of my linksys router with my old cable modem. So I took the patch cable from the modem to the uplink port of my router hoping that would work but alias it didn't work. So I was just wondering if anyone knew any possible solutions to this problem. I'm gonna get a crossover cable this week and try that but I don't think I'd need it since I didn't need one on my previous modem.

I wouldn't expect that you need a crossover cable. That is a weird problem though. The modem works fine when connected to a PC?

Is there a modem configuration you can get into? I know my parents recently had a DSL modem replaced, and I had to go in and configure a couple things within the modem. First time I've actually had access to the config of a modem given to me by my service provider. Check that out. *Might* be your problem. :)

Okay so I do some researching. Here is what I found using google.
Linksys BEFVP41 Version 2 will not work with Comcast. It appears that there is a firmware problem with this box. I took the V2 box to a location that had a Version 1 box on Verizon DSL and it worked great. I took the version 1 box back to the Comcast location and had it up and running in 5 minutes.

That is kinda weird since the router worked with the old cable modem I had before (we had to return it and get a new one because it would reset like every hour or so) I even updated the firmware and still nothing. I guess my next best guess would be to buy a new router. If that doesn't work I'll return it and buy a Linksys cable modem.

I just have to ask but... Did comcast re-provision the new modem. They track it by the mac address and if you replace a modem they have to put the new Mac address into their system and you probbaly should clone its Mac address in the router or reset the router.

I just had a comcast modem die and got another from them and its a pain as their support has tohave the modem connected directly (bypassing the router) to a say ... XP box and re-provioson it. You can not just plug in a new modem and have it work

Tex brings up a great point... Squill, have you tried bypassing the router? Also FYI you don't need a crossover cable to connect to a cable modem unless it's from a hub/switch without uplink.

When I have the modem connected directly to my computer it works so I'm 'assuming' that it was re-provisioned. Plus when I called comcast they asked me for the mac address of the modem and they said that's the mac address they have, so I'm guessing that when we got it from them they put that info into the system before we plgued it up. Also I have tried cloning the mac address of my modem in my router and still had no luck.

Yeah I figured I didn't need a crossover cable for it to work. But I figured I'd try it. But when I have the router pluged up to the modem I do see the lights blinking away on the "internet" port of the router. I just cant seem to get the router to talk to the modem. I dunno, my next bet it to call comcast again and if they can't help me then try a new router.
