data recovery?

so lets say, not so hypothetically speaking .... you managed in one way or another to lose every piece of data that mattered to you from the last 6 years or so..

options:

1 - say no more ... a fresh start is good for the soul :)

2 - data recovery - in which case, any hints as to who one should look to?

thanks ..

So.. How was the data lost? Partition blown? Head crash?

electricity problems and a major backup happened at the same time ...

as far as I can figure it out - write caching+power surge/major hardlock = dead drives :(

Ah. So the drive itself is mechanically screwed? No spinup?

the backup drive is gone, completely ... the original drive though, is detectable, but all the scans ive gone through so far (sector's etc) read only a few files recoverable.

I have faith that some data is recoverable though, you know of any programs - given the data involved i'll say that $ is no object - to a point :) - that could recover the data??

    Try contacting OnTrack...

Damn about ya news mate. :(

Had that before but it was clean start for me.

From what I've heard, data recovery from major players like OnTrack is a very expensive proposition though, easily running into the 4 figure range. :(

If you can get the drive to spinup and be seen and the data has not been overwritten there is software to recover whats left.

If the drive is dead your looking at a profesional recovery where they can actually pull stuff off the platters in some cases around a head crash. Or they replace the circuit board on the drive etc.. Its not for a home user. If you couldnt aford a backup disk or tape system you can't afford to pay for this stuff.

email me and I'll try to help or send me the drive and I'll recover whats physically able to be recovered through any normal means and send it back. I've done this for other forum members if you want referances (long sigh...) Onbe took a WEEK as the drive was very buggerred up and it kept freezing ..... and shorty, prime and the other owners know me. You gotta pay to cover shipping but I don't charge ya a cent. If the results are good and you get 6 years of data you can't replace back you can buy mne a beer. And promise me you will BACKUP from now on.

If the drive is physically OK, this program has saved a number of people (including myself). It's free, so you have nothing to lose.

I know your backup drive is dead. It might help with the original.

well well, I called one of my proffesors last night, and he pointed me to http://www.runtime.org - They make a piece of software called GetDataBack .. and it seems to be working so far - its slow, ive been running a recovery since late last night, but it seems to have found a good amount of the files ... its gonna be interesting re-organizing though, the folder structure is pretty much toast ... but the files are there which is the most important thing ..

    :) Im happy

thanks for the help and the offers of help, Im off to buy new backup drives ..

Oh hell. I could've told you that. ;D

I've shown probably about 2 dozen people GDB thus far. I thought the drive was mechanically ****ed, and you couldn't recover anything on the working drive (You said you'd done scans).

Tex, General Keebler and a few others come to mind.

Just a bump for this post!

    Why? Well....

The memory stick (el-cheapo) went in my domain controller/file/SQL/VMware box yesterday and took my hard drive partition table with it :(

Did a search here, downloaded it and restored my partition table and all my precious partitions!

Time to buy that tape drive that I've been watching on EBay.

THIS PROGRAM ROCKS FOR LOST PARTITIONS!!! :respect:

Here's one that rebuilt my backup drive and recovered all my data.
    Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier
....(free)...... Recovers files from disks with physical damage. Allows you to copy files from disks with problems such as bad sectors, scratches or that just give errors when reading data. The program will attempt to recover every readable piece of a file and put the pieces together. Using this method most types of files can be made useable even if some parts were not recoverable in the end.
You can also use it for copying and moving files over easily.
