I am trying to render out an object with a transparent background so I can put it into a collage of sorts. But I can't seem to figure it out, any ideas?

I don't think this is possible in a straight output image. The transparency can't be done directly in enviroment tab either. Basically, what apply your background to a plane, and then render the plane without everything, open this up in Photoshop and you can make it a new layer and adjust the transparency. Then, render your other objects out, without the background, and save it as a .tga with the Alpha Layer in it. Now open this image if Photoshop, open the channels tab, and copy and paste the bottom layer. Go to color select, hit white, and the fuziness to 200 or so and then hit okay, after that go to select>modify>contract and set the value to one, hit copy and paste and that will remove any background border your image had.
