Well, I finally went with FireFox

edited October 2004 in Science & Tech
I've had FireFox on my PC a few weeks now but it's been just another browser and I.E. has been default but last night I pushed aside I.E. in favor of F.F. finally.
Why? You may ask, was it the security holes in I.E.? Nope, it was due to two things, first is that in modem usage it's far faster and second is the ability to pause downloads.
Yeah, I'm bandwidth raped...24.6k and when I'm running a dl sometimes MSN messenger times out or web pages take forever to load so the pause feature was the clincher.

is it really faster than ie? or at least enough to want to switch? ive only used it on a 700mhz, so i couldn't tell then.

I used Opera (and images-disabled) when I had dialup. It was very quick. If you can find a similar extension (or built-in function) for firefox, you should have a blast.

yeah, on i.e. (at least mine) it'd not want to load a new page until several of the jpegs were loaded, F.F. doesn't have that problem.

Some of you might know this and some may not.. Give these a go.. atleast for dsl connections it speeds things up slighty. I have not tested these on a dialup connection.

    Leet your FF config..

in the address field, type in "about:config" and hit enter

Set the value of network.http.pipelining boolean "true"
Set the value of network.http.pipelining.maxrequests integer 100
Set the value of network.http.proxy.pipelining boolean "true"
Set the value of network.http.max-connections integer 60
Set the value of network.http.max-connections-per-server integer 32
Set the value of network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy integer 16
Set the value of network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server integer 8

    Enjoy...
