windows updates won't install (particularly kb826939)
This seems like the same problem explained in old, closed thread 377 in software/windows.
I had to do a repair-reinstall of windows xp the other day, therefore I had to re-do all of my windows updates. Except for sp2. Per Dell's recommendation, I'll wait one more month.
Apparently (I am a novice) you must have to download and install a first group of 6 or 7 first before they will give you the others. I downloaded and installed them. then I ran windows update again, and it gave me 17 more to do. Most went on except for one that gave me a 'windows file error' Dell had me remove that hotfix from the control panel, put the xp disk in, repair the files. I then ran windows update again with 6 showing up to be reinstalled. the one above, the number I don't remember, went on fine, with no error. But when it got to Rollup 1 KB826939, It said installing, it even put an entry on the programs list in the control panel, but the installing status bar never moved. never!!!
I even took the recommendations in #377, deleted temp files, cleared history and cookies. I did not, however, see it redownload. It just kept trying to reinstall, apparently from one already downloaded. Where would I have gone to delete the downloaded version of this?
I also did these instructions per #377-
1. Click "Start," and then click "Run."
2. Type regsvr32 msscript.ocx in the "Open" box and click "OK."
3. Repeat for dispex.dll,vbscript.dll, and scrrun.dll.
Next, make sure file (open) type .JS is properly
associated:
1. In Control Panel, click "Folder Options," and then
click "File Types."
2. Locate the .JS extension and click "Advanced."
3. Make sure the "Application to perform action" field contains:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\WScript.exe "%1" %*
This is for a Windows XP computer.
For Windows 2000 substitute the C:\WINDOWS\ with C:\Winnt\.
For Windows 98 and Windows Millenium Edition substitute this: C:\WINDOWS\System\
This still did nothing. What do those instructions say, anyway? Do i need to change them back to their default? If so, how and what are they.
Dell provided these 2 articles that they wanted me to look at, but they only say how to tell if the update is on your computer, what it is, how to delete it, and where to get an alternate, shorter version that may work.

http://support.microsoft.com/?KBid=826939
They do not say what the problem is and why they will not work.
Please help if you can, and in a VERY basic way, I am a newbie.
Thanks
