for example something like the matrix titles... obviously i won't ever be able to do anything like that but i would like ones that move etc rather than just flashing up someones name etc...
You're being very vague, Matrix Titles? I mean the movie had all kinds of stuff going on in it's ID Sequence, ending credits, etc.
When you say Movie titles I can only think of a single graphic used to show the movie on it's DVD Case Cover, posters, etc....
Or do you mean when the movie first begins and the names of the director shows up and producers, a few actors names, etc....?
If you're trying to make cool special effects from phaser rifles and lightning to text effects... then I must suggest a very awsome peice of software called ADOBE AFTEREFFECTS... it's like photoshop with timecode... but I think it's better in many ways too.
You see commercials using it all the time, especially using a "filter" called SHINE. When you see text and then lighting flares out of that text... pretty cool effect, however, it's like the lens flare in photoshop, OVER USED
You can create amazing things in After Effects, but last I checked it costs a grand or so to buy, or... you can download the 30-day trial which is a working full version. Once you get to know it a bit, you can create things that rival or are better than what many movies make.
