Downloading a version of Linux?

I've been thinking of trying a Linux operating system, but after reading things at the Linux sites, I'm confused as to which version to get. I was thinking of Mandrake 10 or 10.1, but they give so many options in the titles, it's tough to know which one to try. The one I found looks like it'd take 4 CDs! I'd definitely want a GUI, not a command line type.

Do any versions fit on a single CD? I'd like to boot my laptop off the CD for some applications and use the already installed version of Windows XP Home the rest of the time. The laptop hard drive is small, I couldn't even save 2 CD's worth of data to it without filling it up.

Anyone got a link that I can download from?

personally I like Knoppix. Boots off the CD so you dont have to configure any partitions with hd's if you dont want to.

    Hi Tim,

I have ran almost all of them,,,,
some good some bad.. some suck...

Mandrake stay away from it, Red-hat isnt much better,
if you find RPM stay away from them as well.
I am running one right now that is kinda sweet, its called Xandros

    Get it here
    http://www.xandros.com/about/bittorrent.html
its small will fit on one cd and is very versitile.
Has most of the needed things already installed, web browser, email, word, and a few others, but you can go there site or run the installed shop and download other free stuff and it will install it for you.

real good so far. found all my hardware as well, even my printer, didnt have to go searching for one driver this time.. as with some others.

I downloaded the Knoppix 3.6 english version, since it's supposed to be able to boot off the CD. Then I put the CD in my laptop, and made sure the CD drive is first in the boot sequence.

But it still boots up in XP Home. The CD drive spools up and runs a little, but it comes up in XP Home.

What do I have to change to get it to load Knoppix?

Once it was running in XP Home, I tried clicking on the CD drive and opening the Knoppix file, but that didn't work either.

debian testing. if you have a decent network connection, use the netinstall.
