edited October 2004 in Hardware
I am very interasting in the mini-itx tech, which offer a small mother boards. When I bought the VIA6000, they gave me an adapter which I can connect a compact flash memory to IDE, so what I really like to know, can I use the Compact Falsh memory as a Hard Drive ?? can I install an opertaing system like Windows 98 on it ? it does not matter if it is slow..

Thanks

Oh, it matters. It would be terribly slow. Unusably slow.

Plus, CF cards are WAY more expensive per MB than a small (say 2.5") HD. Also, they are only guaranteed for a certain number of "writes", which will probably go fast if you have an OS on it.

    Thanks for replay,

all what I need is to make a server pc which does not make any think but send some data to the internet . don't you think that work ?, how long would windows 98 SE take for booting more or less ?

Well, Windows 98SE would make a terrible server OS, since it is so insecure. I still that CF as a hard drive will be a terrible idea, since it will die very quickly (probably in months). It's just not reliable enough, nor was it designed for, a lot of small reads and writes.

Why CF? What is your goal? Are you trying to do this cheaply or quietly? If you want cheap, get a standard ATA hard drive. If you want quiet, go with a mini drive (a laptop drive - 2.5" HD)

There are convertors out ther that will take a LapTop Hard drive so you can use a standard IDE cable.
