Blue screen IRQL frequent errors - Ahhh!

This thread was moved from spyware forum as it details an irq_less_than_equal BSOD that is clearly hardware related..

// Shorty

I have been unable to connect to the internet for sometime, but for the last two months I have had a DSL connection at uni, and have stummbled across this majorly annoying problem.-

When I am using the internet my computer will randomly crash with a blue screen IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL Error and begins to dump the physical memory. It occurs more regularly on some site than others, in particular on Torrent sites.

Im not sure what is causing this error so have posted it in the spyware as I had a look at my hijack this log and was scared. However, I was wondering if it could be a problem with my memory or something?

I am running windows XP on a 2.4Gb P4 machine with 512mb of RAM and a Radeon 9700 Graphics card.

Here is my Hijackthis log:-

This sounds more like a technical issue with the hardware you use to connect to the internet. My reasoning is this.

The irq_less_than_equal is reporting a hardware problem with a piece of hardware that shares an interrupt request with another in your machine.

Have you added any new hardware recently? What do you use to connect to the internet??? (including hardware).

I shall move this to general hardware as it is more relevant in there :)

I connect to the internet through a network. my ethernet port is built into my asus p4s8x motherboard. I have no new hardware. However this problem is not new in itself. It has just become much more frequent now that I have connected to the internet. I had the same problem before when connecting through a network to a different dsl connection.

    It's probably your memory.

Do you have a floppy drive or a CD burner?
  • LeepointLeepoint Manchester

    Yeah I have both.

Should i try dissconnecting them from pwr and motherboard to see if i still experience the same problems?

    Download this.

    Unzip it, and run INSTALL.BAT

it will make a bootable floppy. Boot off the floppy and let it run all seven tests. After 20-30 minutes, if all seven tests pass, and you see "Pass:1" on the screen, then your memory is NOT the problem. If you get even one error, your memory is bad.

Well mem test didnt show up any errors, but neither did i let it finish as it had already taken 4hours and it seemed to keep running the same tests. it had passed 19 tests when I gave up. What does this mean?

It means your memory is good. One pass is sufficient :)

    Okay, so next step.

What brand of PSU do you have? Brand and wattage would help. Do you know how to get into your BIOS and check your voltages? If yes, then check them and post them here.

Brand of psu :- Win power switching power supply atx-350 for pentium 4. ill try to get

thoughs voltages from the bios. but on the psu it says -

    input 115vac 8A max. 60 Hz 230VAC 4A max. 50Hz

    output +12v 17A max. +5v 35A max. +3.3V 28A max. -5V 0.5A max. -12v 0.5A max.

    +5V/sbb2.0A max.

    +3.3v voltage - 3.28v

    +5v voltage - 4.91v

    +12v voltage - 11.84

Those voltages are a bit low. I'm gonna try to get the attention of someone who knows more about PSUs than me to see if that's your problem. Chances are you are suffering from "no-name PSU syndrome".

I was having a problem just like this, ended up having to replace my ram, few months later, vid card went dead, replaced that, while after that ram went out again...i ended up getting a new PS (antec) and my problems went away. *shruggs* personaly i wish i had thought of the PS first off, but it was my first Built-By-Me system, regardless expensive lesson learned by me. if you got a spare PS thats not a no namer id try tossing that in for a while and see what happens worst case you have a back up PS sitting around afterword.

What 1030 is telling you sounds like good advice to me too. Even though the voltages you posted aren't too low, maybe the psu is sending out dirty power to the board creating noise spikes that are crashing you. I'd advise getting a Fortron Source, Antec, Sparkle, OCZ or Thermatake or if you can afford it, PC Power and Cooling psu of around 400 watts.
