Wierd HDD problem

For some reason my 80 gig HDD is giving me a a lot of trouble. It seems any new directory I create, or file I move to it, becomes locked down. If I try to access a folder it says I dont have permission. Same goes if I try to delete or move it.
I think this problem stems from when I ran a diskeeper boot time chkdsk and Defrag. I turned my head for a second when it was going on but when I looked back chkdsk was saying something along the lines of 'replacing security id for file #xxxx'. It did that to what appeared to be all my files on the drive. Any ideas of what I should do to fix this? A drive that can't have anything put on it seems kinda useless dontcha think?
:banghead:

//EDIT//
For some reason it allows me to view folders I create but as soon as I move them I get this message upon trying to move them again or simply look in them..
"D:\X\X is not accessible.
Access is denied"

Thanks

Sounds like you need to rest permissions on your whole drive. What OS are you running?

On Win2000, go to the drive in My Computer, right click, go to Properties, Click on Security, go to Advanced, and Click on "Reset permissions on all" blah-blah at the bottom, and click OK.

On other OS's it will be similar, may just be hidden a little differently.

    Hope this helps.

Resetting the permissions sounds like a good start but I am unable to find the option to do so in Win XP Home. If you have any clue as to where I can dig that option up that would be great.
    Thanks

I booted into safe mode and changed the permissions on the drive to allow access from any and every possible group but still cannot access the folders. I have read on the web something to the effect that my security id's have been changed and only a format will correct this problem. Not much of a solution since it doesnt do much in terms of saving my data and I dont really feel like pulling out a spool to back up 80 gigs of stuff. Come guys.. any help here would be appreciated. :eek3:

Well, another boot into safe mode and a change of 'ownership' in the security tab for my drive and all things are back to normal. Thanks for the help guys (?) :p

Glad you got your problem taken care of.
There is also a nifty little utility, which I believe is called "Take Ownership". I've looked high and low, but haven't found it (yet) in my "Sort Me" folder. It basically is a one-click (regular, not "Safe Mode") Windows tool which gets your whole drive back for you immediately.

Thanks for the tool prof! :D

I havent tried it yet but I hope it's easier than having to boot into safe mode every time XP Home gets a little cranky. :p
