Wired Desktop, Wireless Laptop, Linksys WCG200 Wire/Wireless Router, but no network

edited October 2004 in Science & Tech
I'm having multiple problems trying to network my desktop (wired) and my girlfriends laptop (wireless). We mainly want to do this so we can both access the printer which is connected to my computer.

At one point I could see everything on her computer in the shared file, but she couldn't see mine. However, we could ping both computers. Now, neither of us can see the other computer and when we try to ping, she can ping my computer and I can ping my computer, but I can't ping hers and she can't ping her computer either.

At bare minimum, we would just like to share the printer that's connected to my computer. PLEASE help! Thanks!

Mark :D

    Here is a start. http://forums.practicallynetworked.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=833

What is the OS on each computer?
Try to set the network up manually.
Make sure tcp/ip is bound to Client for Microsoft Networking and Printer and Filesharing.
If you can ping each other but not able see then enable netbios over tcp/ip.

Thanks! I'll try these links out later. The Operating Systems are WinXP Home Edition for the wired Desktop and WinXP Professional for the wireless laptop. You might have to "dumb down" your suggestion because I'm only semi-computer geek. Thanks! Oh, both computers cannot ping the wireless laptop AND both computers can ping the wired desktop. Thanks again for your help!

In Pro go to the computer management>Local users and groups and enable the guest account. Not sure where you do this in Home, maybe in Control Panel. I disable simple filesharing in Pro, it is in Folder Options >View at the bottom. Home only uses simple filesharing. Just make sure you are both using the same protocols. These are the important ones. Same workgroup, different computer names
You can do all the above through the System Folder>Computer name
    Client for Microsoft
    Printer and Filesharing
    TCP/IP in properties>wins>enable netbios over tcp/ip
    You can check your bindings
Network Folder>On the toolbar go to advanced then open advanced settings this will show if TCP/IP is bound(checked) to printer and filesharing and client for microsoft
Once you have checked all this just share the printer on the machine it is attached too. Reboot the computers when you make changes. It is a hassle but they need to be rebooted, sometimes often. Forget the wizard, if you are on a router it will take care of and be the DHCP Server.

I forgot the printer will not show up in my My Network Place as a folder. If you haven't shared anything else a Shared Documents folder will show. You can check Printer by either printing something normally, the printer properties will pop up like normal. Or you can go to view workgroup computers then click the printer computer workgroup and it will show up there. There is no need to install the printer on her machine if if you click on it and it asks to install.

Unfortunately, I STILL am unable to network our computers. When I go into Start>My Network Places I see the Shared Docs folder for the other computer but I'm unable to access it. On the other computer (wireless laptop), going through the same protocol, there is nothing displayed. Only My Web Sites on MSN.

I think there are problems regarding our connectivity because the wireless laptop still cannot ping itself and the wired desktop cannot ping the wireless laptop either. I would imagine each computer should be able to ping each other freely. Does anyone know what I need to do so our computers can communicate? Also, when in DOS, the wired desktop lists both computers when "net view" is entered. There is a 6118 error on the wireless computer. Please help this is getting VERY frustrating! Thanks!

    1) This behavior can occur if you enable the ICF that will closes the ports for file sharing by default. To open these ports, right-click the network connection that is firewall protected> Properties>Advanced>Settings>Service Tab>Add, Enter 127.0.0.1) for the required Internet Protocol (IP) number. Enter UDP ports from 135 through 139, and TCP ports from 135 through 139 one by one (the external and internal port numbers should be identical).
    2) This may occur if the workgroup name and the domain name are the different.
    3) No master browser. Starting Computer Browser Service on one of w2k/xp computers should fix the problem
Check #3 in Services. Put it(Computer Browser) on automatic and started on both computers then reboot, not just one that is for ICS. If you are using the Windows Firewall make sure printer and file sharing are checked in the exceptions folder
If you are using a software firewall either turn it off or enter the ip range for your network. ipconfig will give you the ip on both computers incluse your router config also EG. 192.168.1.1-199.168.1.107 I put this in the firewall section of ZA.
