Um, if you are serious, and I wodner if Windows 3.1 will understand your computer's hardware if you do this (probably it will NOT unless this is a very much older computer), you can do it this way:

Insert and boot from the XP install CD. Tell it delete the partition Windows is on-- you WILL lose all files doing this, back up anything you want and expect modern programs NOT to like Windows 3.1 dn older programs will NOT understand the file formats new programs understand.

DO NOT let the XP installer do anything else, eject the XP install CD and then restart witht eh first Windows 3.1 floppy in the floppy drive, and start up so that drive is bootable before the HD in boot order.

I really do NOT recommend this at all for a computer built since 1993, BTW, unless all its parts were mfr'd before then. NOT AT ALL do I recommend this.

Thus the first replier's note in iconic form, WHY would you want to do this for real??? there's in fact only ONE reason I can think of, and if this IS the reason, tell me and I will tell you how to skip the 3.1 install, do it legally, and still get Windows 95 Upgrade to install.... Or, actually, Windows 98, though you will probably need the 3.1 floppies (all five or six of them) and both upgrade CDs if you upgraded from 3.1 to 95 to 98 and used 95 and 98 upgrade CDs.

The other way is to use Partition Magic to delete the NTFS, then use it to make FAT16 partitions which cannot be bigger than 2 GB each for 3.1.

I hope this is a massive joke thread, though I do still remember the needed process in excruciating detail as I grew up with all those Windows versions. In fact I still have a Windows 98 and 98 SE upgrade CD (one each), a Windows 95 upgrade CD, and a floppy set of Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and a floppy set for Windows 3.1 as well as a PC-DOS 7.0 CD. AND what I said WILL work for this.

no, this is not a joke thread. I am serious. Windows XP is the biggest piece of smoldering crap i have ever seen in my entire life. Windows 3.1 is the only good thing Mr. Gates ever came up with. So much freedom. And no im not trying to upgrade to 95/98 cause they are also pieces of crap. Im goin to run 3.1. Its not for my main computer but just for music when the whores come over and i get wasted. Thank you though for telling me how to format the "unformattable" xp.
