Startup Loop

edited November 2004 in Hardware
Hi! I am having a problem with my Dell PC. It will boot up...it shows the dell screen. Then it asks me to press F1 to continue or F2 to enter startup utility. If I press F1, it goes to the Windows XP screen. Then just before the desktop appears, it goes to a light blue screen. Across the top are numbers and letters and on the second line it states that 'the system has been shut down' and then it automatically restarts itself.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

Can you access safe mode by rapidly tapping the F8 key prior to the windows loading screen?

I don't know if it's relevant or not, but I had a similar problem on my laptop. It's got AMD 64-bit CPU. This has some kind of memory protection built into it (I don't know the details - it's far too complicated). Anyway, basically some programs don't work with it and forces the computer to reboot. If the program is loaded at startup (mine was - it was a firewall), as soon as the program loads, it reboots. The only way round it seems to be to boot into Safe Mode and remove the program.

some more info would help as well. i.e. were there any progs installed before this happened (as Pendragon stated). when was the last time the case was opened and the dust blown out? heat does terrible things to computers... was the case bumped, jarred? maybe a mem module or cable was shook loose...

but yeah, try to get it into safe mode by pressing (repeatedly) F8, and go from there...

good luck, and report back yoru findings.

The last thing that happened before the startup problem began was that my Digital Camera software (which has run on my machine for months) froze and I had to reboot. Since it was time for me to go to work, I allowed it to reboot, then once it was at the desktop, I made sure everything was closed and that I didn't get any error messages and then I shut down.

I am able to get to the f8 screen but it will not let me boot up in safe mode or even 'last good configuration' mode. It simply lets me choose a mode then goes through the motions and I end up with the light blue screen again.

I have taken the case off and removed the memory, replaced it, unplugged all cords and wires and replaced them...still nothing.

Any other suggestions?? I'm desperate to get some work out of MY DESKTOP.
