Win 98 upgrade to XP Pro....

edited October 2004 in Science & Tech
I currently have Win 98 installed and it is having a lot of problems currently so I decided that I would finally switch it to XP Pro. Can anyone provide me with details on the best way to do this?

The best way to do it is to back up any sensitive data you may wish to keep (Favorites, documents, etc) onto a CD, then wipe the partition with Windows 98 clean via a format. The format can be done with the Windows XP Pro install disk.

If you have a harddrive with Windows 98, and no partitions on it, therefore you'll be completely formatting the disk, it's best to create a 5-7GB partition via the XP install disk and install XP on that. Then you can install everything else on the remaining space in the other partition that Windows doesn't reside on. That way you need only back up your favorites and your documents (Maybe outlook email history) and then you can reformat again without losing or worrying about any other data.

The easiest way to do it is to simply run the upgrade process, as XP will detect a 98 install and migrate your computer to XP. But many people have experienced stability problems with this. It's generally best just to start from scratch with such a drastic switch like 98 to XP.

    as usual thrax is correct,

the best way is to pretty much wipe the drive, that'll ensure a clean running computer and should help it fun better that if you do a migration

considering its still running 98, i can only assume that its a slower machine and you will need AT LEAST 256mb of ram, 96 is the absolute minimum ( xp wont install if theres less ) and 128 is enuf to get by but u most undoubtedly want more than 128
