I tHink windows media player higjacked

Every Time i try to play any internet streams with wmp10 it crashes ......
I can get it to play media that is on my hard drive but not streamed from the net..
I have used Adaware and spybot but nothing seems to work to fix it...

I am experiencing the same problem.

I found Windows Media Player to be opening on startup, and had other errors, so I downloaded and ran AdAware and found an embarrassing number of things with it. :shakehead

I used the task manager and msconfig to figure out that Media Player was running under the process "services.exe" located in the MS Office program group.

Services.exe shouldn't be there, should it? A program critical to the operation of Windows would NOT be located in an OPTIONAL program group.

I disabled that instance of services.exe in the startup configuration and that seems to have solved the problem. I haven't deleted the file, but it's at least not being processed on startup.

I have not had any further problems as of yet.

If anyone thinks this approach isn't a good one, please let me know, and tell me why. And suggest a better one, if possible.

The file should also be deleted. If on an NT system, the legitimate file would be in the system32 folder.

Just confirming that what you said was applicable to XP, as it is a slightly different flavor of NT.

I never intended to become "the guy who can fix a Windows computer" and never tried to become him, either. But when you're the only one around who's not afraid to go exploring when every other use of the machine is utterly TERRIFIED of screwing something up to the point where they won't even click the OK button on a simple alerting popup, and will let it stay on the screen for HOURS until you get a chance to look at it, you end up being the one who has utterly no choice BUT to learn how to fix things.

I'm getting pretty good at it! I haven't needed much outside
help at all for a couple of years now.

There's not much harm you can do without getting past an "Are you sure you
want to do that?" window. If people would just get that through their thick heads, my workload would be greatly decreased. :shakehead
