Strange Enter Key Problem- please help!

edited October 2004 in Science & Tech
Hi there. I've been having this weird problem now for the past 5 months. I'll try my best to explain it. Let's say that I'm typing in a text box on a website, like the one I'm typing in right now. And let's say that I press the enter key because I want to start a new paragraph. Instead of the the mouse or cursor, or whatever you call it, jumping to where I want it to go quickly and easily, the whole page kind of freezes for a second, and acts as if I took the mouse and clicked somewhere else. Then, I have to manually take my mouse and click the area where I want to start typing. I hope that made sense. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this ridiculous problem? It annoys the hell out of me. Thanks so much!!

Does it do this all of the time, or just sometimes?
When it does it, how do you finally get the cursor down to the next line?
Is it only on websites, or does it happen in any other windows?
What OS and browser are you using?

I have windows 98, SE and IE. This happens all the time when I'm on the internet, typing on any website. But it never happens on Microsoft word. And I get the cursor to where I want it to go by manually using the mouse to place the cursor there. (clicking in that area). Thanks :-)

Interesting. That means that it is creating the carriage-return in the text-box, but then it is de-selecting the box. I'd say that your easiest fix might be to simply back-up your important files, then reinstall Windows, but I might be missing something. I'll keep looking into it. Has anyone else seen this issue before?

Thanks, explaining it like you did ("it is creating the carriage-return in the text-box, but then it is de-selecting the box") sounds exactly right. It just started doing this one day out of the blue. If there's an easy fix that would be great, because since it is a relatively small problem, I don't want to have to reinstall windows.

What version of Internet Explorer are you using? You can find out by going to Help/About Internet Explorer. If it is not version 6.something, I'd recommend updating to the latest verison of MSIE.

You can also try out Firefox, by clicking on the "Take Back the Web" link in my signature, and see if it has the same problem.
