ALCXMNTR.EXE and a hijack this log. Please Help!

Hello,

I'm new to Short Media and I'm barely computer literate so please bear with me. I just got a new computer a few weeks ago and have been diligently using Ad-Aware and AVG Anti-Virus System. However, I recently found 3 files that looked a bit strange to me - though none of them were detected by either Ad-Aware or AVG. The icons looked like little blue bugs (I'd get a picture for you but I haven't installed Photoshop yet).

Anyway, just to be safe, I took down the file names: alcrmv.exe, alcupd.exe, and ALXCMNTR.EXE. After googling the files, I discovered that most sources said they were sound drivers, except for the latter. Then I stumbled on your site and did everything you suggested - I ran Ad-Aware again, then Search and Destroy and finally downloaded Hijack This. I noticed that ALXCMNTR.EXE was listed in the Hijack This log, along with the logs of a few other users here.

I was hoping that I could post my log and maybe get some more information on what this file is and if/how I should get rid of it.

Thank you so much for your help. I love how your site is really friendly and helpful.

ALCXMNTR.EXE is the RealTek AC97 Event Monitor. Nothing you should worry about. Not sure what it exactly does though. :D

Also if you a really concerned about that type of stuff (virus/ spyware etc), ditch AVG and obtain Norton AntiVirus.

    cheers

Thanks. Is it possible to get Norton for free?

    Not legally.

However here is a link I found for a trial version of 2004. I would try it out and see how you like it. I know this sounds crazy but ultimately it is prob worth part of a pay check just to give in and spend the $50 to buy Norton 2005. Did I mention it integrates nicely with Service Pack 2? :D

    The link: http://nct.symantecstore.com/fulfill/0001.105

might try this if you dont wanna give away your email addy. http://www.soft32.com/download_9693.html
