Help Me Find a Digital Camcorder

Alright. I've wanted one for a long time, but always had other things jump in line before it.
I've got, let's say, a $500-$600 price range on this. I'm going to hopefully be getting one for Christmas. If I have to throw in extra money, then I will. But only if it's truly worth it.
I'd like to have the ability for digital stills, but it's not a necessity. I haven't had a lot of chance to research, and I really don't know where to start either.
So, please, suggest to me some good quality digital camcorders.
Which brands should I look at?
Should I worry about the digital still feature?
I like extra goodies, but are they worth the extra cost?
Should I think about spending more already to make the purchase worth it? Or is the $500-$600 range a good idea?
Feel free to ask me any questions. I'm just stuck on what to look at right now with all the available options.
