Computer keeps shutting down!

Blarg! I don't get it! Whenever you turn on this computer it will just shut itself off within ten minutes of it being on. The system has SAV on it and when I was running a scan for viruses (which it shut down in the middle of) it found a couple trojans, I think that may be what's causing this problem. Even if you do nothing after turning it on (ie: leaving it at the login screen) it will shut itself off. I've also tried checking that computer for viruses from my own computer accross the network, but it shut off in the middle of that, too.

I hate this network. This pc is vital to everyone. The way everything is set up... Well, since I can't find a paint-like program on this mac I'll try and explain...
First off, the modem and switch/router are in the same place. Two computers close by connect to the switch. The computer with the shutdown problem also connects to this switch. A hub is connected to a second NIC in that computer, and then my computer and my dad's computer connect to that hub. So basically, without that computer, anything connected to that hub is cut off from the network and the rest of the world.

Any ideas? I'll go and check now to see if teh same thing happens in safe mode. Maybe I can get rid of the virus... Sorry for the long post!

Have you tried Microsoft's Sasser remover???

For starters, try going to http://www.microsoft.com/protect/ and pull thier killers.

(Yes, its a navigable link even without the .asp page call.)

I would, if that does not do it, try an F-Prot trial, though I will need to look at the log from that to help if it cannot delete some files.

Second, do you have SP2 and NAV on the computer???? If so, AFAIK the patches for 2003 and 2004 versions of NAV are NOT yet patched to be SP2 compatible. NAV 2005 HAS been so patched.

Third, if Norton Firewall AND the SP2 firewall are running actively, try shutting down the Windows XP SP2 or SP1 firewall, every once and a while they conflict and both can shut down or lock a computer if massively hit with firewall violations (PC-Flank or GRC's NMAP level scannign can casue this, for instance). The SP2 and Norton Firewall DO conflict, also. Thus, I use a ROUTER plus the XP SP2 firewalls for a firewall combo, run XP SP2, AND run F-Prot and NOT NAV. No shutdowns here.

If none of that works, look for HS dust under HS fans, and consider heatsinking and fanning both bridge chips on motherboard.

Hmm... Everything seems fine under safe mode. It just completed searching for viruses for 30 mins now without finding a thing. But it still shuts down, outside of safe mode.

I can't use that link on that computer, as it won't stay on long enough to even fully log into a user account, much less navigate to that web site... :banghead:

Yes, SP2 is on that computer, along with every other computer in this house. I forget which version of SAV is on that computer... :wtf: The same program has found and removed a couple things on my computer, though, on SP2.

Yes, it will, NAV 2003 and 2004 will remove viruses. BUT, the issue is with automatic liveupdate, with those revs, for one thing. Symantec HAS patched NAV 2005, not yet 2004 or 2003. AND, you need to manually do LiveUpdates on 2003 and 2004.

Do you use a modem to dial up to internet, or are you set up with broadband??? If broadband and if you have a router, you might be able to grab AND RUN the little Microsoft killers in ten-fifteen mintues from within Safe Mode with Networking. Ever browsed from SAFE MODE??? Or updated NAV with LiveUpdate from within SAFE MODE???

IF you have another computer that can browse (or a friend does), the virus killers can be downloaded, burned to a CD as a set on one CD, or individually stuck on one floppy per killer (have two specific ones on one floppy, suggest one per floppy with label). THEN, run them in safe mode, even if you have to take a minute to copy them to HD in normal mode. Ditto F-Prot, though it needs a CD for its archive sets if you grab the whole set of trials for different OSs-- and even needs same for one OS version as it comes with defs. F-prot's site will be browseable from a Linux box, even.
