help please!! magicsearch/elitetoolbar--major problem

edited November 2004 in Spyware & Virus Removal
let me just say as a neophyte here, i'm tremendously impressed by the entire community here--the past day has been one of the most frustrating i've ever had in my life, and the only oasis of hope has been reading through the posts. i've followed up on all of the great advice in other threads, and i'm still having problems so i was hoping y'all could give me some additional advice.

short version--my computer was infected with elitetoolbar/magicsearch and i used the most recent versions of adaware, spybot, and hijackthis to remove as many files as possible. internet eplorer is almost back to normal--i have my homepage reset again, etc--but it still acts strange, and ie freezes up every once in a while. worse yet, i can't open any folders on my computer--my computer, stuff on the desktop, etc. i can open files, but only stuff sitting on the desktop. every time i try to open something it pauses, and then the window comes up that asks whether or not i want to send an error report.

the long version--

so where to start--i was surfing around when my computer became infected. there was an error message, and it just restarted without prompting or anything. it ran a disk check to verify the c drive, and said it found three bad files. they were elite toolbar and a couple others, i don't remember the names, but it asked whether i wanted to convert the folders to files. seemed fishy, so i didn't say anything, though i should have said no of course. anyhow, it apparently converted them. then, when my computer booted up, the background image was gone and in its place was this annoying active desktop scare message/hmtl page. then of course internet eplorer was hijacked and every time i entered a site it would send me to these porno sites. i followed all of the advice i could find on the site, but can't cure the windows eplorer errors from occuring, and the remaining residuals from the web browser infection. most bothersome is that everything works fine in safe mode!!

anyhow, i've pasted my hijackthis file in the case that it might be helpful for any diagnosis, but i am worried that the real problem is my windows and i'll have to reinstall everything. i would greatly appreciate any help, and hopefully the other people that have similar problems will be helped, too.

you guys are friggin' heroes. seriously. if there is a way to donate to shortmedia or show my gratitude in some way i would love to give something back. please let me know.

so that seemed to work, though i couldn't find any of the four files in the system32 directory. i pasted my log below.

    just two follow up questions--
one, should i now turn system restore back on/
two, i was under the impression that my cable modem and/or wireless modem had a built in firewall. clearly i am a dumba--. is there a freeware firewall or something that you would recommend/

Okay, deleted those two. Here's my log. Keep getting an error message on startup about poptrap.exe--innocuous?

pop3trap.exe is part of TrendMicro. You still have a trojan on your computer though:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\msiexec.exe

Fix that entry then find and delete msiexec.exe, reboot and post a new log.

So do I need to reinstall that file now? Looks like I need it...

Just had something from "viewpoint media" pop up randomly, looks fishy.

Oh crap... I wasn't sure on that file, so I searched on Google. All I got were HJT logs, and 99% of the time when that happens, it's spyware. Yes, you will need to re-install it.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

Fix that, then find and delete "Viewpoint" to get rid of the popup you reported.

Check to see if that file is in the recycle bin. You might get lucky :).
