Go to memtest, download the floppy maker, and use it to create a bootable floppy disk. Boot off that disk, and let all seven tests run. It will say "Pass:1" when it is finished. If you get to "pass:1" with zero errors, then your memory is good. Please let us know the results of that test before we continue.

If you don't have a floppy drive installed, you can also download one of the pre-compiled bootable ISOs. Burn the image to disk with Nero or Easy CD Creator, boot from the CD, and proceed as instructed.

    Well hmm.

I've had similar bluescreens from failing HDDs, but that doesn't necessarily mean your HDD is at fault.

It there a program to test the HDD on cd maybe? I don't have a floppy. I have a WD harddrive. Thanks, Adam

Faulty PSU? Monitor voltages over a couple of hours and see if they fluctuate. Also it could be dirty mains power. Do you have a line filter/UPS between the wall and the computer?

Do that bluescreen happen when the system is idle or does it happen when you have load on it, like games etc?

Edit// Since you can run memtest for several hours, my idea is wrong. I was thinking as Brian did, about the psu, but it can't be that either since memtest works.

When you install XP, do you install it with the ACPI switch, or the multiple processor switch? The first screen you see when installing the os is "Press F6 to load scsi or raid drivers", if you press F5 there instead, you can choose between several choices.
Also, in the mainboards bios, is there an apic 1.4 switch? Enabled or disabled?

The blue screen happens whenever the computer feels like it, folding, games, or just surfing the web. Windows has the ACPI mulitproceser hal installed. and the bios has the 1.4 switch enabled.

That is weird indeed. What does the bsod say? Something along the "irq less than..." or something completely different? Have you tried other operating systems? Not that it's a sollution, but it would be interesting to know if it happend with other os as well.

It was MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION. with the save dump info I posted above. I don't really have anything other then XP to try. I guess I could borrow 2000 from a buddy and try that. Thanks, Adam

Hmmm...that sounds like harddrive corruption to me. Even if you have formatted and reinstalled. Do you have a spare drive around to test a fresh install on? Any drive will do as we just wanna check if it is the drive or not.

Call WD tech support, see if they can ship you a diag & util set on CD. IF you had a CD-burner in another computer, a bootable CD with the WD diags and utils included on it would work, YES. Tell computer to boot from CD, THEN HD in boot order setting in BIOS. Since Windows is farting like that now, I would think it best not to use same computer to build and burn a boot CD, though.
