New Billboard Ringtone Chart To Begin This Week

edited November 2004 in Science & Tech
Ringtones have become so popular that Billboard will begin publishing the Top 20 ringtone sales each week. The first Top 20 chart will begin this week, with a Ringtone Chart debuting in the November 6th edition of Billboard.
The chart will be sponsored by the CTIA, an international association for the wireless telecommunications industry. With the U.S. mobile music market estimated to be greater than US$300 million, "generated almost exclusively from the sale of ringtones," one can understand why ringtone sales have made a large enough impact on the music industry to deserve their own music chart. It will be interesting to see how the ringtone chart compares with the regular Top 20 charts. It could be that songs that never make any other chart will make the Top 20 Ringtone Chart. I think the greatest thing about the new Billboard Ringtone Chart is that obscure music like the television theme song from "Sanford and Son" may actually have a chance.
omg you have to be kidding me. -KF
