Non-stop Pop-ups

Hi, I'm hoping I can get some help with a problem. I'm having IE pop-ups show up even when IE is not open. Many of these pop-ups won't close normally, I have to cancel them from the task manager. I've run cwshredder, ad-aware, and spybot, and they've reduced the frequency, but not gotten rid of the problem. Here's my hijack log:

Open Task Manager & end process on the following:
oodag.exe
C:\windows\180ax.exe

Then go to C:\WINDOWS\System32 and delete the oodag.exe file and C:\windows and delete the 180ax.exe file.

Scan with hijackthis and tick the boxes next to all the following entries, then close all browser and explorer windows, and hit the "Fix checked" button.

Reboot normally after doing the above, rescan with hijackthis, then post that log here please.

Ok, I followed your instructions as best I could. I could not end the oodag.exe process, it gave me a violation, but on further investigation this turned out to be my O&O Defrag utility. I doubt this was a culprit of my pop-ups, as I've been using it for quite a while.

I could not delete the files you listed in safe mode because they no longer seem to exist. I'm assuming that is a good thing. Here is my current log:

And unfortunately it does not seem to have worked. I just got one of the same pop-ups, amusingly enough an ad for a pop-up blocker!

You need to update hijackthis to version 1.98.2.

Scan with hijackthis and tick the boxes next to all the following entries, then close all browser and explorer windows, and hit the "Fix checked" button.

Then delete that file. Post another log taken after a reboot, using the latest hijackthis.

Ok, this is getting weird. I updated to the new version of hijackthis, but now the entry you listed is no longer there, and msmc.exe does not exist. Yet, pop-ups persist.

download the VX cleaner plug in for Adaware. Install it, then open Adaware & go to *add-ons* & run the plug-in. If anything is found, select *clean system* & when done, reboot & run Adaware & let it finish the clean-up. Reboot again.

I presume that you have done a system search for that file?
Are you positive the pop-ups are not related to the oodag.exe file? Perhaps you can end process on it and see what, if any. difference it makes.
See what the VX2 cleaner comes up with first though.

Ok, I did as you instructed, and it appears to have worked! I've left my system running for most of the day with no pop-ups (normally I get about 4-6 an hour).

It actually took several rounds to completely clean VX off my machine. All told I had to run vxcleaner and scan with ad-aware about a half dozen times (a reboot between each scan and vxclean). Each time ad-aware detected new files to clean. FYI, Ad-aware said I had VX2 variant 3.

Also, I'm pretty sure the oodag.exe file is legit, but even if it wasn't I can't close it. Every time I try to end the process (for testing purposes) it gave me a violation error.

Oh, and THANK YOU!!!! Thanks so very much. These pop-ups have been interrupting gaming time and throwing porn ads up in front of my wife and daughter for weeks now.

Log looks ok. When there are pop ups with no sign in the log, it is a good indication of this infection (VX).
