My new addiction
Despite Rome Total War I am also addicted to this game.
EVE Online, and it seems they are working on a new version of the game, a BIG time patch which will appearently include much larger ships strip mining moons, planets with storms and city details, etc... It's called Shiva and looks to be pretty awesome.
But it's still the old slow game, but you aren't forced to mine as a newb, you can bounty hunt or do whatever you want and make tons of money either way. It's only been a few days I already have 3 ships, about to get an Industrial Ship so I can try out some marketing, trade, what have you.
I am doing all this so that later I can be a terrorist  I have it all planned out. I'll get a battleship sometime in the next couple months, plot out a path of destruction, get down the directions for the jumpgates so I can do my damage get the hell out. I don't wanna be famous or anything, I want to be infamous! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
*the last few words of Big Bear
I don't really play it all the time, but becuase of how you level you can leave the game and come back later to level some more then get some real life work done. Basically, leveling uses "Skills" and there is no real limit to it either as far as I can tell. But it can take a LONG time. It starts off with just a few minutes to skill level, then a couple hours, then several hours, then SEVERAL DAYS. Plus you can only do one at a time. So you could be waiting a week before you can level your next skill. But there are MANY skills and they don't have to be high either. There should be a 7 day trial, give it a try... but I recomend that if you do try it out ask me for some help so you don't get too frustrated with it's steep learning curve

My question is how much of a learning curve is there in the game?
Only if you let it... I've pretty much figured it out already. Plus joining a corporation helps too, just joined one last night, they'll be giving me a couple industrial ships and alot of money.
Basically, your start the game, you go through a tutorial, talk to an agent which gives you missions(if you wanna do this, it's kinda an extension of the tutorial to help you learn the Market, Trade, Weapons, etc... I recomend it). Then once your done with her missions she introduces you to another agent who gives you more missions(again only if you want). Or you can just start mining(make sure you learn about skills, eve forums are very useful). Once you get a half decent ship(make sure you have the right skills required), and good weapons you can go hunting for pirates.
All in all, you don't have to touch mining one bit, you can just go in and start PvPing, but you'll die alot, but you'll also get the hang of battle well also.
Again, any help you need I'll be happy to give.
enough.
waking.
hours.
This game is so great! I am actually getting more done now in my school work than before... but at the same time it may be bad for my health.
So far, when I joined this corp they gave me 2 million isk, and I'll be receiving more as payment for building a few models of in game ships for an animation one of the corporate members wants to do. I don't even need to texture them. Anyways, I have been spending that money on skills and researching those skills so I can get better. Which means every hour or so I check up on the game, between which I do my other work. I stayed up all night last night to do this as well, I could just set it to do a skill that takes 10 hours or even 21 hours, I even now have skills that require a week to research.(real life time btw).... but damnit it is just making my character so bad ass... I am killing pirates pretty quickly.
Then I ran into a new pirate with missiles. OUCH... I feel like staying up all night again, no sleep for the hardcore gamer!!! :headbange
If you want to be an uber miner/nerd type guy that doesnt shoot many things, then you want to set your attributes up with alot of Intell and Memory
If you want to be the "BUN GUNS! Blow crap up! KILL KILL KILL" type guy, Load up with Perception and Willpower
Or you can do like I did and just make them all balanced which sort of works ok in the end.
ALWAYS pick your OWN schools! You can make an account that will be able to fly a crusier in less then 2 days of training. Just pick the Captians schools and they will give you a boost to your Frigate skill and space ship command.
Anything and everything you want to know about ships and modules is all in the market, all you have to do is read about what the mods do and you wont have to ask very maney questions, at least I didn't. PvP tho, well that's a different story, 'tis teh complecated! Well, it is at first anyway.
Here's some links to a few PvP movies that DON'T suck!

Those are just a few movies that look good and show what Eve can be like...
Did you get your learning skills trained?
